Superman IV: The Quest for Peace Movie Review

Superman IV: The Quest for Peace is a 1987 superhero film directed by Sidney J. Furie and starring Christopher Reeve. It’s such a terrible movie.

Superman IV: The Quest for Peace Movie Review

With the world on the brink of a nuclear war, Superman takes it upon himself to destroy all nuclear weapons. Lex Luthor, however, creates Nuclear Man, a force strong enough to take down Superman. Just in that premise alone you can see how ludicrous this whole affair is. Yes, Superman movies are all somewhat silly, but this one is ridiculous to the point of being unbearable.

Christopher Reeve himself is even weak here, and that whole subplot with Lois was so bad and not needed at all. The entire love triangle that they proposed here was also horrible, and not suitable for this particular character at all. Lex Luthor is even campier here than before, and do not get me started on Nuclear Man who is by far one of the campiest, worst Hollywood villains of all time.

Literally all of the scenes where the two fought against each other are the weakest of the movie with that Moon scene being the worst offender how hilariously stupid it is. The whole film is dumb, and it has such terrible action with the fights that are horribly choreographed and at times quite laughable.

Superman IV: The Quest for Peace also has amazingly bad special effects, even for its time. The movie looks and sounds ugly; even ‘Superman III’ is much better, and that was also a bad movie. It’s clear why this was the end of this franchise, but it was so sad to see it go on such an atrocious note. And I can see now why it is on so many worst movies of all time lists.

Superman IV: The Quest for Peace turned out to be the bottom of the barrel for this franchise which with it ended on such an atrocious note. The movie has a terrible use of its characters, a horribly campy villain, bad special effects and such stupid action sequences. It thus clearly justifies its infamous reputation.

My Rating – 1.5
