Superman III Movie Review

Superman III is a 1983 superhero film directed by Richard Lester and starring Christopher Reeve and Richard Pryor. It’s such a ridiculous movie.

Entrepreneur Ross Webster teams up with a computer genius in order to realize his own evil intentions. When Superman obstructs his plans, he decides to destroy him. First off, I don’t know what happened from now onward, but this is where the series reached its immensely campy levels impossible to bear.

Yes, the first two movies, especially the second one, are campy and silly in their own right, but mostly in sections. This one, however, is campy and ridiculous throughout, and the story is its biggest offence. I did not buy any of it. The evil Superman subplot was rushed, and though the action in that part was a lot of fun, the subplot was unnecessary overall.

And everything with the computer slacker, the villain and their stupid plans was just too stupid to bear. Yes, Richard Pryor’s character here is so mediocre that not a lot of people can really like him here. Him becoming a henchman was ludicrous, and he was constantly not believable in any way.

The villain himself is so horrible and campy that he beats previous villains in this franchise which says a lot in and of itself. Unfortunately, Lois Lane has been replaced with Lana Lang in this movie, but Lana herself is fine and charming in her own right.

The relationship between the two produced the best moments in the movie and overall Christopher Reeve is as great as he always was in the main role. I personally liked that slapstick beginning which was cartoony and childish, but entertaining and endearing.

But then the rest of the movie also stayed that way, and it was simply too much to bear. Superman III also looks inferior to its predecessors, the dialogue is so stupid and the pacing is horrible and runtime overlong for such a simple, silly premise. It’s crazy that they got another movie out of this franchise when this one was so objectively mediocre.

Superman III again features a strong Christopher Reeve performance and the romantic parts once again worked, but everything else is so objectively bad. The villain is horrible, the Richard Pryor character is so unbelievable and the entire storyline is ridiculously campy, implausible and filled with stupid slapstick scenes that go on forever instead of action or any superheroics really.

My Rating – 2
