Sonic Triple Trouble Game Review

Sonic Triple Trouble is a 1994 platform video game developed by Aspect and published by Sega for the Game Gear. It’s a surprisingly solid handheld game.

This is a rare Sonic game that was released solely for the Game Gear. It got a very positive reception during its initial release and is now considered to be among the greatest Sonic games released on this handheld system. And it surely offers a very good gaming experience.

The plot here is rather simplistic and forgettable. It features Knuckles, which was great, but the added character Nack the Weasel was too odd. It was wonderful that you could play as Tails, which I surely did myself as I love that furry guy. He is as always slower, but terrific at navigating the larger areas with his flying abilities.

This was essential in making the levels easily navigable as the zones this time around are quite large and the game included exploration as parts of some levels were very labyrinthine and complicated, which led to a lot of adventuring and getting lost for better and for worse. It was also a wonderful choice to give players more rings and take less from them when hit, thus featuring fewer unnecessary deaths.

Sonic Triple Trouble consists of six zones in total. All zones have three acts per usual. The last level ends with a boss fight. The bosses are still too easy here, though they pose at least a bit more of a threat than the ones in ‘Sonic Chaos’. Great Turquoise Zone is pretty much a repeat of the first zone from its predecessor, thus it’s somewhat forgettable, though serviceable at the end of the day.

I also did not care for Tidal Plant Zone. In fact, I found playing through it absolutely infuriating as this is one of those water Sonic zones where you can drown after a certain time without oxygen. Couple that with the labyrinthine areas and it was easy to get lost in these levels. Atomic Destroyer Zone is also rather frustrating in the pipes being overly abundant and difficult to navigate, but in its aesthetic and emphasis on high speed this zone represented classic Sonic.

Meta Junglira Zone is lush in its forest landscapes and quite enjoyable, though rather easy in comparison to the other zones in this installment. Robotnik Winter Zone, on the other hand, is obviously more difficult as these snowy levels can get quite slippery in certain platforms. It’s a gorgeous-looking zone that was endlessly appealing to go through. But the best zone is easily Sunset Park Zone. Not only is it populated by wonderful cart-driving moments, but it is also a stunning yellow-tinted zone with memorable backgrounds and excellent designs.

Sonic Triple Trouble is solid graphically speaking. While it’s still an 8-bit handheld game, it’s surprisingly rich in colors and backgrounds for such a primitive technology, which did result in slowed down framerate at times, but some memorable imagery nonetheless. The score and sound are also solid and the game controls very well. It’s short at just six zones, but at least they are more sprawling in scope, which made the game longer overall.

Sonic Triple Trouble is technically a solid game that features some memorable level design too. While it is uneven in quality and never truly great at anything that it does, this entry still has some pretty good zones, solid graphics and refreshingly sprawling and labyrinthine levels that made it more unique. It’s a surprisingly strong 8-bit Sonic game.

My Rating – 4
