Sing 2 is a 2021 animated musical film directed by Garth Jennings. It’s a solid Illumination sequel that could have been better.

Buster Moon and his friends must persuade reclusive rock star Clay Calloway to join them for the opening of a new show. The first ‘Sing’ movie was released back in 2016 and it remains in my opinion the best movie that this studio has ever created and certainly their most underrated. That is why this movie was ultimately very disappointing to me despite it being solid overall.

This sequel came out five years after the original, which was simply a bad choice as most people forgot about the characters by now. What I do remember is that the characterization was actually stupendous in the original, which is why here the characters seemed inferior, especially their so-so arcs. The movie devotes too much time to music and spectacle and not enough on the human aspects of the story.

Buster is as likable as always and Rosita did get a couple of very moving moments. Johnny is still strong as this gorilla that had a very troublesome relationship with his father before, but here his arc simply wasn’t as good as the aforementioned one. The new characters aren’t great. Porsha is stereotypical, but her father is quite menacing as the movie’s villain in a way. His scenes were among my favorites. The rock star is a typical character, but his arc was solidly executed.

Sing 2 features a terrific soundtrack that consists of many instantly memorable, famous pop, rock and even rap tunes that most audiences will be familiar with as they are all quite recent. Thus, it’s a very modern jukebox musical and I loved its energy in particular. The execution of those singing and dancing scenes was just an incredible audio-visual spectacle fueled by a lot of heart and soul.

The animation is superb and so polished. The character design is top-notch and again the sequences on the stage are the best executed ones. The movie’s energy is truly something else and although it can get too frenetic and bombastic, it will undoubtedly prove to be a treat for all music fans out there. I just wish that it had better plot and dialogue.

We had to wait five whole years for the sequel to Sing, which was a ridiculously long time that did end up hurting the franchise. The original is by far my favorite Illumination movie so far while this sequel is solid, but never as strong as that lovely flick. The character development is much weaker this time around. It has a plethora of likable personalities, but their arcs left a lot to be desired as the movie is focused almost entirely on putting on a great show. And those musical sequences really are a blast. The film has an undeniably high energy to it and it is an audio-visual spectacle, but I wish that it had a better storyline overall.

My Rating – 3.5
