Sally Swing Review

Sally Swing Review

Sally Swing is a 1938 animated short film from the Betty Boop series. It is a pretty forgettable cartoon.

Betty Boop, auditioning bandleaders for a college swing dance, discovers a cleaning woman who resembles Betty Grable. The woman then becomes a swing dancer. My issue with this short is that it is once again a Betty Boop cartoon that introduces a new character that is a one-off. Sally is somewhat memorable and her dance scenes are a lot of fun, but otherwise she got no development to speak of.

Sally Swing is very well animated and wonderfully scored with a lot of swingin’ music that was catchy and so entertaining. Betty is also cute and endearing with a role of a scout that she never really got before. I just wished that the plot and characterization were stronger as the movie was too music-focused to wholly satisfy.

Sally Swing is weakly plotted and forgettable, but it benefits from a solid titular character and fun swing music.

My Rating – 3.4
