Ranking Big Mouth Seasons

Throughout seven seasons so far, Big Mouth managed to top itself more often than not with the later seasons faring the best in terms of quality and memorable episodes. This is my ranking of all seven seasons so far, taking into account character arcs, humor and the amount of great episodes that each season has.

7. Season 1

Season 1 of Big Mouth is actually very good. It established the tone of the serious deftly from the first episode onward and the characterization was top-notch from the start too. The reason why it lands on the bottom is because most comedies fail to find their footing until later seasons with this one having that same issue. It’s still pretty good, just not great.

Big Mouth Season 1 Review

Best MomentJay having imaginary sex with his anthropomorphized pillows made for the most unforgettable moment in this season. How he talked to the two pillows was so funny as was his clueless and very childlike personality. It’s one of the best Jay-centric episodes, which is terrific as I am a big fan of the character.

6. Season 3

The third season of this show still wasn’t great. This was the time when the series had its fair share of excellent episodes, but also some less memorable ones with this season being somewhat forgettable in the bigger scope of things. But the episodes that were strong were excellent.

Big Mouth Season 3 Review

Best Moment – Speaking of strong episodes, Rankings was phenomenal. Here, we get to see two different hotness rankings and the results were absolutely hilarious. Seeing everybody’s reactions was priceless and every single character got their moment to shine in this very well written storyline.

5. Season 2

While it did start on a weaker note, the second season ended greatly. This installment was better than its immediate predecessor and successor because it had more creative episodes that opened up the world and its characters even more. A couple of episodes on this roster were instant classics.

Big Mouth Season 2 Review

Best Moment – Finally seeing the world of the hormone monsters was fantastic, but Jay’s sexual escapades with his male and female furniture made for the best and funniest moment of this season. His sexual explorations and his crazy home appliances sessions are very relatable and so funny.

4. Season 7

The main problem with Season 7 is that it sidelined too many characters while focusing on Andrew way too much. He was terrific and hilarious, but I wanted more of Jay, Lola and others nonetheless. It’s a season that was pretty much a precursor to the final season, but it works more often than not as it has its fair share of excellent episodes.

Big Mouth Season 7 Review

Best Moment – Anything that happened in the international episode is worth highlighting here. The song about pubes was particularly exuberant and memorable. However, my favorite scene was that absolutely hilarious sequence where Andrew wanted to have sex with an older woman. He was particularly pervy and ridiculous that time.

3. Season 5

The fifth season of Big Mouth has its pacing issues and the mid section is inferior, but the last couple of episodes are fantastic with the finale being the best one. The highlights of this season were the animation, the excellently utilized hormone monsters and the anger issues that were incorporated into the narrative quite well.

Big Mouth Season 5 Review

Best Moment – The highlight here was the episode A Very Big Mouth Christmas. This was so gruesome, perverse and ridiculous that it really worked. The characters were so well utilized throughout this story while the diverse animation styles made for one of the most artistic installments of this show.

2. Season 4

While Season 4 was busy with so many characters, many of them worked and the highlights were clearly Missy, Jay, Matthew and Nick. It was so sad seeing Jay suffer with Lola, Matthew got a very good coming out storyline, and both Missy and Nick continued to evolve as characters. The show really started to fire on all cylinders during this period.

Big Mouth Season 4 Review

Best Moment – The camp storyline culminated with Andrew having trouble pooping. This all led to that grotesque sequence that mirrored child birth where Andrew finally managed to poop properly with Nick holding his hand and cheering him up. It is the most deranged moment on the entire show and one that sticks in your mind long after seeing it.

1. Season 6

In the sixth season, the themes and characterization are the highlights while the humor is also stupendous with many laugh-out-loud one-liners and edgy jokes throughout. When you take into account both strong character arcs and the ratio of great to weaker episodes, this is definitely the best and most satisfactory season of Big Mouth.

Big Mouth Season 6 Review

Best Moment – The finale where the characters switched bodies really worked and it was the most inventive episode of the entire series. But the highlight in terms of iconic moments has to be the break-up between Jay and Matthew that was ridiculously gay and campy, which fitted their relationships like a glove.
