Big Mouth Season 6 Review

The sixth season of Big Mouth was released on Netflix in late 2022. It just might be the best season of the show so far.

The Hookup House is the first of the ten episodes and it is superb. It started off many storylines for this season and even new characters (Elijah), but it was at its best when focusing on the titular event. The comedy highlight was the ad that the boys did for it. That was hilarious. Twenty Two and You is also a lot of fun and it is particularly memorable for the crazy Nick’s father subplot.

Vagina Shame is clearly girl-centric, thus it was not as funny as the rest of the episodes. It is very well written and important, but it failed to make me laugh like most of the others. Rice Purity Test is very funny in the titular test that reveals the level of horniness of each character. Andrew’s Gonna Touch a Boob Tonight is at its best in the Nick and his grandfather moments while Andrew’s relationship is also well explored.

The Apple Brooch is one of two experimental episodes of this season and it was terrific. The premise was so original and fun. Dadda Dia! is where Lola absolutely shined and she made me laugh so much. Asexual Healing is an overly woke episode that is concerned with asexuality and gender expression. It was depicted in a humorous manner, but still the show is at its best when it is staying away from the usual online discourse of today.

The Parents Aren’t Right is a great build-up for the explosive finale. The highlight was the breakup between Matthew and Jay that was “the gayest ever” as put so amusingly by Maury. Fucked Up Friday is where the show parodied ‘Back to the Future’, but it went even further, way too close to comfort when it comes to incest. But it was hilarious and the premise of switching bodies was executed in a very confident manner, elevating what is otherwise a highly familiar cartoon formula by this point.

The reason why this season worked better than its predecessors lies in its ratio of strong episodes far outweighing the weaker ones, which themselves were still solid. But the highlight of the season is the continued exploration of sexuality in all its complex dynamics and facets as well as superb character development. Most characters get terrific arcs here.

Nick has to deal with his crazy father and grandfather. He gets a bit less screen time in comparison to the two, but fragile masculinity is so well explored with these two older men and their ridiculous dynamic. Coach Steve is just as annoying as ever, but Maury was hilarious throughout as he spewed hysterical one-liner after one-liner. Connie also got some very funny lines as did the ridiculous Rick.

Andrew is just as “depraved” as ever and his adventures continue to be the craziest, but he did receive an overly harsh conclusion to his short-lived romance. Jay is definitely funny and as endearing as ever and his relationship with Matthew did produce some very amusing moments here, but I still contend that he was better off with Lola and much funnier.

Speaking of Lola, she only got a few episodes to shine, but they really humanized her while still retaining her humor. She is an unexpected inspirational figure in a way. Shame Wizard was unfortunately absent this time around while Missy got saddled with a rather uninteresting romance with the asexual Elijah. But Andrew’s dad was clearly one of the standout characters on this season as his marriage falling apart and rekindling arc was so well executed.

Overall, the sixth season of Big Mouth has its less effective episodes and some arcs are only okay, but most characters got terrific arcs and a lot of superb development. The themes and characterization are the highlights while the humor is also stupendous with many laugh-out-loud one-liners and edgy jokes throughout. This is definitely the best season so far in a show that constantly keeps improving.

Worst Episodes: Vagina Shame and Asexual Healing.

Best Episodes: The Hookup House, The Apple Brooch, Dadda Dia!, The Parents Aren’t Right and Fucked Up Friday.

My Rating – 4.2
