Possessor Movie Review

Possessor is a 2020 science fiction thriller film directed by Brandon Cronenberg. It’s a very generic, highly overrated movie.

Possessor follows an agent who works for a secretive organization that uses brain-implant technology to inhabit other people’s bodies, ultimately driving them to commit assassinations for high-paying clients. I was intrigued by this premise and I was expecting a very good flick, but what I got was one of the most mediocre 2020 movies for sure.

My main issue with the film is that it’s all just a big, uninteresting thriller. Yes, this isn’t a horror movie, not even close. It’s more of a thriller with very underutilized science fiction elements that are, yes, fascinating, but again too undercooked to make a significant impact.

It starts off promisingly and there are some scenes here that are quite intense and so well executed, but the second half of the movie basically became this overly repetitive taking over the protagonist’s body and killing scenes that I felt that I was seeing the same scene replayed over and over again until it bored me to death.

I also got a big problem with the gore elements. Yes, David Cronenberg’s movies are usually quite gory, but they also have a message to them and they are not disgusting throughout. This one has its themes, but the gore took over any interesting plot development and it was simply too disgusting and too much.

So yes, Possessor is a very disappointing mediocrity. Brandon is not his father whatsoever, and I found his direction the weakest part of the movie along with the pace. The action scenes are dull, though some are undeniably effective, but they quickly lost their edge. The movie is quite original, I will give it that, but the execution should have been a lot better. The acting is good for sure, but I continue to find Christopher Abbott quite annoying as an actor. Andrea Riseborough made a much bigger impact here.

Brandon Cronenberg is no his father, not even close. Yes, Possessor is a very mediocre, highly overrated movie that is initially quite interesting in its original concept, but its repetitious plot development hurt it in the long run and so did the over-reliance on excessive gore.
