Pokémon (Diamond and Pearl: Battle Dimension) Season 11 Review

Pokémon: Diamond and Pearl: Battle Dimension is the eleventh season of Pokémon and a subpar one when compared to its predecessor.

Pokémon Season 11 Review

………………………………………………….

Yes, the previous season was a breath of fresh air as it introduced us to new characters and the new generation of Pokémon, but this one again goes back to the previous trappings of the entire show such as the emphasis on filler material and recycled creatures and characters.

In terms of the creatures, I mean that we see Swinub and Gligar among many other previous generation Pokémon and I do not get the need to revisit them when there are so many Gen IV Pokémon that they can use. I never got that and it seems unfair as thus the first two generations will always get the most coverage. Chimchar of course gets the best usage and arc of the Gen IV ones, but I have to say that Piplop is way too overused by Dawn.

Speaking of Dawn, I dislike the tendency to put female characters into these Pokémon beauty and performance contests and I would like to see the girls fight in battles as much as the boys do. That seems sexist and shows the series’ age very obviously.

She continues to be pretty much the same character as May is and that was most evident when the two were put together in the episode where May returned, though that was a pretty strong episode. Ash and Pikachu are reliably solid as is Brock, but Paul continues to be the new Gary pretty much and I would like entirely new characters for once instead of revisiting similar personalities over and over again.

There are some pretty terrific fights to be had in this season and also some great adventures with the underwater and cave episodes being the highlights. I continue to adore Team Rocket and I am particularly liking this new character that Jesse is playing and thus manages to sneak into every tournament Dawn attends. Her performance is thankfully good for once and she steals the show during this season from Meowth and James.

Overall, I liked this season as it has some excellent battles which are very well thought out and some great adventures as well, but the filler material is again overwhelming and the new characters are basically the same personalities we constantly see on this show which is getting very problematic.

Worst Episodes: Throwing the Track Switch, Sleigh of Sand, Battling the Generation Gap, A Trainer and Child Reunion and Aiding the Enemy.

Best Episodes: Once There Were Greenfields, Team Shocker, Enter Galactic, Staging a Heroes’ Welcome and Strategy with a Smile.

My Rating – 3.4
