Planes Movie Review

Planes is a 2013 animated family film directed by Klay Hill. It’s theatrically released Disneytoon Studios offering and one of the weakest of the studio.

Dusty, a crop duster plane, dreams of becoming a great air racer. Along with his friend, Chug, a fuel truck, Dusty practices flying maneuvers in order to qualify for the Wings Across the Globe race. This wasn’t a Pixar movie, but a Disneytoon movie that entirely copies one franchise from Pixar, which is obviously the Cars franchise.

Much has been said about this series, but I personally really like the first movie and the third is even solid, but the problem with this spin-off of sorts is that it is even weaker than the second Cars movie and that one is Pixar’s nadir.

That is because the plot is so damn uninspired. Everything here goes as you expect it would go with every single plot point being predictable and dull. Thus, there is no room for surprises, which is something that some of the Cars movies at least had in their third acts.

I also really did not care for these characters. Dusty is your standard protagonist while all the others are incredibly forgettable. The voice acting is fine, but nothing particularly inspired. The same goes for the other technical aspects too.

Planes is well animated, I will give it that. It looks very polished and cool while the scenes in the sky are the only at least somewhat memorable and inspired moments that, pun intended, lifted the movie to some heights, but still it would crash down pretty quickly every single time.

Planes is such a mediocre movie. The animation is very good and the flying scenes are cool, but the plot is going through the motions, the characters are dull and the movie is uninspired and cheap throughout. It never should have gotten a theatrical release.

My Rating – 2
