Out Review

Out Review

Out is a 2020 animated short film from Pixar. It’s a sweet movie coming from SparkShorts.

Greg is gay and living with his boyfriend. They move to find a new house, but he hasn’t told his parents about his boyfriend yet. When they come in, he switches bodies with his dog through magical means and fixes things with his family once and for all. This short is the first ever Pixar/Disney film that has an openly gay character and it deals with homosexuality so openly. The anxiety surrounding coming out was very well depicted, but of course the happy ending felt rushed and unrealistic.

Out is well animated and filled with warm colors that fit well into its narrative of acceptance and love. The scenes with the dog are clearly the best ones. Though the concept of switching bodies was seen many times before, the coming out twist made it somewhat unique, in particular the chase scenes were a lot of fun. The ending was abrupt, but the magical element with the rainbow and magical cat and dog was so over-the-top gay and colorful, but fittingly so this animation.

Out is definitely familiar in its body switching formula, but the coming out aspect made it more authentic. It’s a sweet, colorful flick that’s a lot of fun as well.

My Rating – 3.9
