Nuts and Volts Review

Nuts and Volts Review

Nuts and Volts is a 1964 animated short film from the Looney Tunes series. It is a pretty solid flick.

After getting tired of chasing Speedy Gonzales around the house, Sylvester decides to try a more modern-technology approach by using a hi-tech security system and a robot to hunt down and catch Speedy. While the premise admittedly made the short way too similar to ‘Tom and Jerry’ cartoons, it was still solidly executed and a lot of fun. A couple of gags didn’t quite work, but most thankfully did.

The robot that Sylvester builds takes up the majority of the short and some of the gags with him are terrific. The one where the robot and the cat themselves collide was great. Speedy has so much fun ridiculing Sylvester in this short and he steals the show throughout. The animation is also competent and the robot is very well designed. This is a rare story starring these two that is entirely set indoors and in my book it actually worked, making me wish for more of these excursions.

Nuts and Volts is familiar in its premise for sure, but the execution matters and here it was quite good, resulting in a fun Sylvester/Speedy outing.

My Rating – 3.9
