Nona Review

Nona is a 2021 animated short film that is the tenth entry in the SparkShorts series. It is probably the weakest short in the series so far.

It follows a grandmother who is caught between her two favorite things when her granddaughter is unexpectedly dropped off during the day she was planning to spend watching her favorite TV show. What I liked about this movie is the grandma’s character. She is different than your usual grandma as she is fun and into sports. I also found the animation both stellar and even creative in some scene transitions.

However, that’s pretty much it. Nona is so slight in terms of storytelling and so thematically empty that it left me feeling cold. The characters were underdeveloped and the movie is too much of slice-of-life storytelling, leading to an uneventful, pointless narrative that is endearing, but utterly forgettable.

Nona is the weakest SparkShorts cartoon so far. It looks good and it is endearing, but it’s also empty in terms of purpose and slim in storytelling.

My Rating – 3.4
