Mythic Quest Season 3 Review

The third season of Mythic Quest is simply not as strong as the previous season, but it’s on par with the first one. The second half here was better than the first.

Across the Universe addressed the parting of F. Murray Abraham from the show surprisingly well. It was both amusing and moving. My issue here is that he should have never left the show. They basically kicked him out for made-up “microagressions”. C.W. was one of the best and funniest characters on Mythic Quest, so he will be sorely missed.

Partners and Crushing It are both pretty good episodes, but this season started on a somewhat clunky note as all of these episodes are actually quite good, but far from great as the crew is separated and their dynamic was, thus, lost. The Two Joes fared much better as it saw Jo have an important business meeting with a famous actor all the while showing just how socially awkward and crazy she is. Jo really is the most underrated character on this series.

Playpen has probably the best use of Dana and Rachel in this season that saw them separated way too much, thus their couple dynamic was lost. Dana starting a friendship with Poppy was also cool to witness here and so was the insight into creating a game and how fun comes first. The 12 Hours of Christmas is the weakest episode of the season unfortunately. It’s a solid episode for sure as it has its charming moments, but it’s just your standard holiday sitcom episode that is overly cheesy for this show.

My main issue with Sarian is that failed to compete with the last season’s C.W. flashback episode. For what was basically an origin story for both Ian and Poppy, we did not get to learn all that much about them with Poppy’s family life being particularly rushed. But seeing how she was always ambitious and awkward was interesting and it was especially moving seeing how broken Ian’s family is and how the two met in that hilarious and wonderful final scene.

Ian and Poppy argue throughout the entirety of To Catch a Mouse while the others try to catch a mouse with some amusing scenarios. The Year of Phil is consistently strong, but it’s at its best when focusing on Carol’s subplot as she realizes that she employed an entirely diverse crew, so she now cannot fire anybody. This was a great critique of politically correct employment practices and diversity hires in America right now. Carol also was much more used throughout this season and she was actually quite funny at times.

Buffalo Chicken Pizza reunited the entire crew, which was expected to happen and quite obvious, but necessary as you really should never separate your crew in a sitcom. The highlight of this episode was Ian and Poppy finally putting aside their grievances. Their platonic friendship is a particularly potent relationship as they continue to be the heart of the series. I just wish the others could get as much screen time as these two always do.

Overall, the third season of Mythic Quest has its weaker episodes, but for the most part it was a strong, if far from great season that was particularly terrific in its final two episodes while the first couple were the weakest. Ian and Poppy are the heart of the season while Carol, David and Jo are the comedic standouts. The show still fails to deal with the gaming industry insightfully, but at least it remains a fun workplace comedy.

Worst Episodes: Across the Universe and The 12 Hours of Christmas.

Best Episodes: The Year of Phil and Buffalo Chicken Pizza.

My Rating – 4.1
