Mother Was a Rooster Review

Mother Was a Rooster Review

Mother Was a Rooster is a 1962 animated short film from the Merry Melodies series. It is a solid, but far from great cartoon.

The Barnyard Dawg steals an ostrich egg and places it by Foghorn. When he wakes up, he thinks he has laid a huge egg. My main issues with this short are the premise and the forgettable ostrich character. The storyline is been there, done that. Nothing here is remotely original and that ostrich is unfortunately an uninteresting creation.

With that being said, the main characters are still a delight. Foghorn himself is very funny at times and how he thinks of himself as a mother here was hilarious. Dawg actually stole the movie as his schemes were entertaining and his interactions with his rooster were so much fun. The ending was weak, but the beginning was quite strong.

Mother Was a Rooster is great in the main characters and their dynamic, but otherwise it left a lot to be desired, especially in its lackluster plot.

My Rating – 3.7
