Just Plane Beep Review

Just Plane Beep Review

Just Plane Beep is a 1965 animated short film from the Merry Melodies series. It is a solid, but flawed cartoon.

Wile E. Coyote builds a World War I bi-plane to chase the Road Runner. This period introduced one-gag shorts to this series, which was a fine choice as it led to a refreshing change in pace, but this one unfortunately failed to make proper use of its admittedly terrific premise. They had the coyote piloting this junk of a plane, but they still failed to make the gags great.

The imagery of him piloting the plane was funny in and of itself. The animation was strong and the beginning was an excellent hook for the entire short. The plane breaking off in pieces all the time was quite amusing, but the gags themselves were far from inventive and/or memorable. Most were too familiar to each other and a distinct lack of variety could be felt throughout this short.

Just Plane Beep had a great premise and some amusing imagery, but this Road Runner short failed to execute its terrific premise to the fullest potential.

My Rating – 3.5
