Ice Age: Collision Course Movie Review

Ice Age: Collision Course is a 2016 animated family comedy film produced by Blue Sky Studios. It’s another bad step for this franchise, being basically the worst entry so far.

Scrat accidentally sets off an asteroid to Earth while trying to get his acorn. However, Manny, Sid and Diego must join forces with Buck to prevent the asteroid from wiping out their existence. I really hated the idea as a whole. The asteroid looked cool, but the science behind it was even more horrendous than the science of the previous entries in the franchise and simply ludicrous as is the overall plot this time around.

There are so many silly scenes here that might appeal to children, but as an adult, I found them utterly preposterous. Why did this movie have to be so damn silly? I do not approve of excessive goofiness even in animation, which is why watching this one felt very frustrating to me.

Even more irritating are the characters. Yes, once again we got a lot of terrible supporting players that ruin the enjoyment of the movie, especially Shangri Llama. That one is horrible and unfunny and ridiculous. Gavin and Gertie are not that memorable villains and Crash and Eddie continue to be an absolute nuisance how annoying they are.

In Collision Course, Manny got all this family drama going on, but none of it was remotely interesting unfortunately as nobody cares about his kid’s romance. Diego is also very poorly used here and even Sid only got a few good moments here and there. By now, the series has gotten so many characters that even four hours of runtime could not support them.

However, there is only one honestly rather good point to this movie, and it comes to no surprise that it is Scrat himself. Yes, he made the movie at least enjoyable in his cute scenes that were even hilarious. The highlight is undoubtedly the final scene on Mars where he basically destroyed Mars’ chance at life. That is the type of silly that works for me as the character is hilarious whatever his antics are. The movie also has fine animation and those two are pretty much the only good aspects in this very bad flick.

Being undoubtedly the nadir of its franchise, Collision Course is so bad. The series by now has reached such an enormous number of characters that no runtime could ever properly use all of them. Here, all are either annoying or forgettable in their uninteresting subplots. The overall storyline is utterly preposterous. It was simply too much, even for a kids’ flick. The only saving grace here is Scrat as he was so funny once again, especially in the Martian scene.

My Rating – 2
