I Heard Review

I Heard Review

I Heard is a 1933 animated short film from the Betty Boop series. It is a very surreal short.

The miners go to Betty Boop’s tavern, where a lot of swinging jazz music plays. Eventually, Betty and the others escape from the ghosts chasing them in the mines. The film implies that these ghosts are the deceased miners that died due to an accident probably. Thus, this movie deals with a very tragic real life scenario, which was unexpectedly incorporated here.

But other than that dark element, I Heard is a whole lot of energetic, fast-paced fun. This is one of the last truly surreal Betty Boop shorts and it mostly worked. Its story is non-existent and the movie needed a stronger role for Betty herself, but the animation is mesmerizing and the score is so fantastic. The two jazz songs that are included here are both very catchy and just highly entertaining.

I Heard lacks in terms of character moments and plot, but the animation is fantastic and the swinging jazz music is a delight.

My Rating – 4
