On a luxury monster cruise ship Dracula meets Ericka, the captain of the ship, who belongs to the family of Van Helsing that wants to destroy the entire monster race. This is another breezy, fun flick in this series with a plot that is once again standard, but solid and amusing enough. This new romantic development led to new characters, and a new comedy angle for Sandler to play off.

Drac is great here, and his love life is so well explored. That Grindr reference really cracked me up. Captain Ericka van Helsing is also terrific, and although obvious in her shifting sides, she was still a great new addition to this roster of characters, and a great fit for Drac. Unfortunately, the strong emphasis on these two led to such weaker development and utilization of all the other characters who are just there for a small amount of time.

The animation is once again a lot of fun, the character designs are uniformly great, and the color palette is very charming and overall the movie is quite polished and modern-looking. The action is also well executed, and the new settings are all highly memorable and well utilized into the overall story.

Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation is at its best when dealing with the romantic comedy elements, those were fun and very appealing. I particularly loved the apps, the dates and their every interaction. I also really liked that underwater sequence which was so terrific.

But the final act with the monster and all that chaos was overwhelming, and simply all of the other characters felt like fillers here more than ever before. The soundtrack is once again overly modern and utterly unappealing. But the humor and the dialogue are solid. To me it lies in the middle. It is better than the first, but weaker than the second flick.

Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation is another solid, fun entry in this franchise with a messy, chaotic third act, but a very amusing romantic comedy main storyline that really worked. The soundtrack is annoying, but the humor and the animation are both very good. It continues to be a very underappreciated, needlessly maligned animated series that is consistently solid and quite entertaining.

My Rating – 3.5
