Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers Movie Review

Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers is a 1989 slasher flick starring Donald Pleasence and Danielle Harris. It’s one of the weaker Halloween entries unfortunately.

Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers Movie Review

Myers again returns to his home town to kill his young niece and Dr. Loomis is again up to stop him. Needless to say, not much has changed since the fourth entry in the franchise as the plot is pretty much the same, though the approach and execution are less traditional this time around. I have to say that this movie is entertaining, at least it was for me. That’s why I didn’t hate it as much as others trashed it. It’s a mediocrity, but a fun mediocrity which is rarely dull.

But it surely is ridiculous with that finale being particularly crazy and that other villain they introduced simply did not work. The movie has some of those crazy, “original” scenes that differentiate it from its predecessors, but most did not work so it doesn’t matter. Otherwise, it’s a standard affair in terms of the plot, characters and approach and I liked that even though I found it utterly uninspired. But it’s simply never scary at all. It’s fun, but the murder scenes are executed in such a standard, unexciting manner that the scares just never materialized.

The movie’s a hit-or-miss with its characters and actors. Donald Pleasence chewed the scenery like crazy here. I definitely found that choice ludicrous as he was so good in the previous movies and here he is just so over-the-top, one-note and melodramatic that I don’t know what happened. Maybe he got bored with his always the same role.

But Danielle Harris is actually pretty good as Jamie Lloyd and that muting choice was interesting at first. She’s an okay character, but not particularly memorable. As for others, they are your typical trashy adolescent girls with Tina being the worst example of that. She’s too annoying.

Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers is definitely well paced and fun, but with over-the-top dialogue which actually made me laugh and certainly made me entertained, but it also made me realize how silly and cheesy this flick is. It doesn’t help that its 80s aesthetic is overly pronounced here again to a fun, but dated end result.

Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers is another uninspired Halloween sequel which is certainly fun in its own cheesy and silly way, but some plot points simply did not work and the kills were shot in an uninspired way leading to a lack of scares. The characters are also mostly disposable. Danielle Harris is actually fine in her role, but I don’t know what happened with Donald Pleasence here as he chewed scenery like crazy and was burdened with such over-the-top dialogue which was ridiculous to witness.

My Rating – 2.5
