Glee Season 5 Review

The fifth season of Glee has its very weak parts, but also some great streaks. It is a solid improvement upon the previous season.

This new story approach worked for me. Yes, the characters leave to live in NYC, many of them, and those at the high school in Ohio are left by the show. Although that left me missing Sue so much, I was still fine with the others being forgotten as their stories were either finished or they aren’t all that interesting characters in the case of Marley and others.

Finn’s death is handled solidly, but a bit too emotionally manipulative, though some of those scenes were truly tragic. Adam Lambert joined the show in one effective supporting performance, but otherwise his character served no bigger purpose.

I absolutely despised that relationship between Mercedes and Sam. So horrible. It ended positively well, but still the show expects us to believe that a young adolescent guy is going to sacrifice his sexual urges to be with Mercedes who wants to save herself for marriage. That was beyond stupid on both of those counts. And the same goes for Kurt’s apparent porn phobia which was absolutely ridiculous.

Kurt himself really took a backseat this season, and I really root for him to break up with Blaine as that relationship is so stale and going nowhere that it needs to be cut off as soon as possible. Santana is so damn entertaining in her bitchy behavior and everything she says that her eventual turn to the friendly side was disappointing. Britanny is always great, but underused.

Artie being so promiscuous was also extremely unrealistic, Tina continues to be a silly, but amusing character and of course Rachel is really getting on my nerves now. She apparently can do no wrong on this show as she not only jump-started her Broadway career, but she’s now in television all of a sudden. I really hate how unrealistic this Rachel fairy tale is. It makes for fun, but silly viewing experience.

The entire season is like that. It’s too silly and unrealistic to be taken seriously, but it’s fun and definitely engaging in its fair share of episodes with only some being very weak. Most are solid and I liked the friendship angle with all of the guys and girls hanging out in NYC, though again that was incredibly unrealistic too.

Worst Episodes: Love, Love, Love and The Back-Up Plan.

Best Episodes: Puppet Masters and City of Angels.

My Rating – 3.8
