Galavant Season 2 Review

The second season of Galavant is again very entertaining and crazy, but it definitely is inferior to its predecessor for a couple of reasons.

Looks like we’re all together again.

Lovely! Our story lines have been much too separated

Galavant Battle of the Three Armies………………………………………………………

The music is one of those reasons. Yes, I liked these songs, but they aren’t as good as the songs from season one. Off with His Shirt is very funny, Goodbye is very sweet and Love Makes the World Brand New is a lot of fun and so catchy plus it is a perfect parody of Disney songs and even having sing-along lyrics with a bird on top of the words no less. But all of the other songs were either forgettable or entirely useless in terms of the momentum.

The plot is also a bit weaker than before. I liked that the characters who were together are now apart and vice versa and I liked that this season is much more ambitious and epic in its scope. However, the last battle and both the penultimate episode and the finale felt a bit weak to me. And overall in terms of the episodes, there were more of those weaker ones and less great ones in comparison to the previous season. But it is great that the number of episode has been upped from eight to ten.

Galavant About Last Knight………………………………………………………

Now let’s talk about each of Galavant’s characters and thus I will touch upon this season’s plot developments as well. First off, Galavant. Well, he wasn’t as great here because he wasn’t particularly emphasized as the emphasis was shifted from him to Richard this season, but he’s still pretty good. Speaking of Richard, he is just awesome and even better now than he was before. He is the true hero of this show and possibly even its true protagonist. I loved his arc from being weak to becoming a hero, that was really well handled. The jokes about his pet dragon being basically a wizard were funny and watching him and Galavant together was a lot of fun. His relationship with Roberta was also really sweet, albeit she is a frustratingly underutilized character.

Galavant Aw, Hell, the King………………………………………………………

Gareth and Madelena are fantastic. The two of them start a romance here and it was so satisfying as they are so different from each other and yet are such a perfect couple. Watching both of them come to terms with falling in love for the first time was a lot of fun. But on their own, Gareth is great in his struggles with being a king as well as his relationship with Richard and Madalena is excellent as she stayed a villain which I loved. The cliffhanger at the end with her going to learn dark arts is intriguing and her path to magic was very interesting and so entertaining this season.

Isabella is boring to me. Yes, she has her moments, but I honestly thought that her character should have been full damsel in distress and not fueled by feminist needs of today’s audience as the show definitely needs more realistic female characters for that time plus the shift from damsel in distress to a warrior in her character is not handled well.

Galavant The One True King (To Unite Them All)………………………………………………………

Sid is also annoying, but he has his moments. Some of his songs were very funny and his jokes can be quite good at times while being pretty annoying at other times. The Jester is as good as he was before and Isabella’s parents are simply hilarious with their funny remarks. Gwynne and Vincenzo are such a great, sweet couple and their macabre sense of humor is so amusing. Chester Wormwood is too much of a caricature, but he does provide some good humor from time to time. And of the guest characters, none of them are particularly memorable, but some of the new settings were interesting with the gay bar being an unexpected one. The war elements were a bit lacking, but the magic element was very amusing and I overall liked the arcs of most of the characters.

In the end, the second season of Galavant is inferior to the first one owing to too many weaker episodes and weaker songs, but some of the plot elements including magic were very amusing and the characters are again great with the highlights being Richard, Madalena and Gareth who are all amazing and so much fun. It is such a fun and original show and it is such a shame that it was cancelled after just two seasons as it had potential for more. But at least it got two seasons and both are pretty good and a lot of underrated fun.
