Dirty Harry Movie Review

Dirty Harry is a 1971 action thriller film directed by Don Siegel and starring Clint Eastwood. It’s a very overrated, weak movie that bored me personally.

You’ve gotta ask yourself one question:

Do I feel lucky?

Well, do ya, punk?

It follows a brutal police inspector seeking out a vicious criminal. This is one of those movies that truly do not appeal to me to be honest. It’s an action flick intended to appeal to those action genre fans, but mostly those who were born in the seventies or eighties as for nowadays this is a rather dated movie.

I found Clint Eastwood’s performance here very mediocre. He basically does the same shtick all over again by acting tough and cool, and I was simply bored by it. I do realize that Callahan’s badass attitude is entertaining to many viewers, but apart from a couple of moments, I did not find it all that fun. Scorpio is a formidable villain for sure, but all the other characters are utterly forgettable.

The movie is famous for that one scene where he gives that very famous speech to this black man, and yes, that is the most memorable thing about this movie. But most of the other scenes aren’t as memorable as the film is very repetitively structured and never particularly engaging in its various chases and shootouts.

Dirty Harry is this weird, very 70s mix of thriller and action genres with definite neo-noir elements to it, but again only some of the atmosphere worked for me, but most of the scenes were just shootout action with not enough suspense to them.

The movie was shot very well, the action is well executed and the score is actually pretty good and intense. Some thriller scenes were good, especially the beginning and the ending, but most of the middle act scenes were far from great.

I was also constantly bothered by the terrible sound here. It’s one of those movies which ramp up the sound during action scenes so much that I constantly had to adjust the sound down during those scenes and up during the very low dialogue scenes, which are all okay overall, but too sparse in runtime.

Dirty Harry has a couple of intense sequences, a solid villain and it’s well shot and scored, but it’s a repetitive movie that is far from truly entertaining. Its main character is also very boring as are most of the film’s forgettable action sequences, resulting in an overrated, dated flick.

My Rating – 3
