Deduce, You Say! Review

Deduce, You Say! Review

Deduce, You Say! is a 1956 animated short film from the Looney Tunes series. It is a solid, but far from hilarious parody.

This was an attempt from Looney Tunes to parody Sherlock Holmes, but not an entirely successful one at that to be honest. The main issue here is that it was never hilarious to me and that entire third act was disappointing because the gags with the brute man were repetitive and somewhat not fitting with this particular narrative.

The best part is the beginning where Daffy Duck gets to literally become Holmes, but a screwy Daffy version of him. It was very funny and amusing seeing him talk like Daffy with his lisp, but also, well, deduce and employ logic to solve crimes. The fact that Porky Pig is his assistant Watson was also wonderful. It was perfect casting and the pig actually stole the show in the latter half of this very well animated and moody cartoon.

Deduce, You Say! is problematic in its weaker second half, but the casting was great as both Porky and Daffy were stupendous here.

My Rating – 3.9
