Big Mouth Season 7 Review

The seventh and penultimate season of Big Mouth has its issues, but it was mostly another stellar addition to this terrific show.

Big Mouth’s Going to High School (But Not for Nine More Episodes) is a solid season opener that isn’t great as it is just a setup for this and the final season, but it works because it was pleasantly hectic and fun. The titular song was hilariously meta. Epididymitis is not as memorable in the other character’s storylines, but Andrew got to shine here. He has a testicular problem, so he shouldn’t masturbate, which led to hilarious scenes where he just couldn’t make it and had to do it no matter what.

Ambition Gremlin continues this Andrew not masturbating storyline by including the titular monster that tries to make Andrew work hard and be ambitious. The clash between these two sides to Andrew’s personality was quite amusing to witness and this season did include the characters from ‘Human Resources’ rather deftly. That series ended with its second season, but adding those characters to the main show is a sound idea. Day Tripping features Andrew and Nick getting high to expectedly bizarre and surreal imagery.

Graduation sees Andrew try to apologize to every kid in school for being so gross. He once again was the highlight of an episode in this season that unfortunately failed to properly utilize other characters besides him. The International Show may function as a filler, but this is easily the standout episode of this season and one of the most inventive things the show’s ever done.

Getting to visit so many different countries across basically all continents was refreshing and so much fun as we get to see how puberty is the same all around the world. This episode is in subtitles, which was also quite daring. The highlights include the Brazilian gay storyline that was so much fun, the Iranian girl section that was quite funny, and of course the Puerto Rico sequence that capped off the episode with a terrific, catchy and very amusing Lin-Manuel Miranda-penned Latin song.

Get the Fuck Outta My House was excellent as well. Andrew having a thing for a much older woman produced some genuinely hilarious results. His perv nature was mined for laughs gloriously throughout this season. The Bad Hookup saw Nick have a very uncomfortable hookup moment with a girl who should have just remained his friend. Nick trying to be cooler and more comfortable was also a strong arc in this season.

Panic! At the Mall did benefit from a hilarious Coach Steve. Having him talk to his made-up alter-ego in the form of a glove was quite amusing and very reminiscent to Garrison from ‘South Park’. But other than that, this episode was not great. The same goes for A Finger in Time, which just set up the final season without being particularly good in its own right.

At the end of the day, Big Mouth Season 7 will not rank among the best seasons of this show and it paled in comparison to its terrific predecessor. Most characters did not get their proper due with Jay and Lola being sidelined, but Andrew was hilarious throughout while Jessi and Nick got their solid storylines too. It’s a season that somewhat seemed like a filler, but it has its fair share of terrific episodes, so it ultimately worked.

Worst Episodes: Panic! At the Mall and A Finger in Time.

Best Episodes: The International Show and Get the Fuck Outta My House.

My Rating – 4.1
