Best and Worst Films from October 2022

Best Films from October 2022:

3. Barbarian

I really liked ‘Pearl’ and I found ‘Bodies Bodies Bodies’ to be highly relevant and superbly scripted, but Barbarian is the horror pick for this month that I enjoyed the most. This is a very original take on the supernatural horror genre with a terrific script, excellent structure and solidly developed characters. It’s one of the best horrors of the year.

2. Three Thousand Years of Longing

A highly underrated gem of a movie, Three Thousand Years of Longing features excellent performances from Elba and Swinton and an enchanting, wonderful tale that spans centuries while still remaining intimate and oh so poetic. It’s a glorious return for both the fantasy genre and George Miller.

1. This Is Not a Burial, It’s a Resurrection

This Is Not a Burial, It’s a Resurrection is one of the best movies that I’ve seen during my African Cinema Marathon that I did during September and October. A beautiful, somber movie from the country of Lesotho, it is a thematically rich tale that is powered by an amazing main acting performance and some sequences that tug right at the heartstrings. It’s arthouse cinema at its best.

Worst Films from October 2022:

3. Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters

I actually liked the first entry in this now dead franchise, but this second one was a terribly mediocre adaptation that just did not work. The script was beyond messy, the characters weren’t handled properly at all and the VFX were painful to watch at times. Very disappointing.

2. Crimes of the Future

Crimes of the Future is one of the first movies directed by Cronenberg, and as a result it’s one of his worst and most amateurish efforts. There are so many bad choices committed here with the most atrocious one being the off-putting narration and lack of dialogue. The 2022 spiritual successor is infinitely better in every way.

1. Child’s Pray 3

Child’s Play 3 is definitely the worst entry in this long-running franchise as it is not just chaotic and frankly boring, but it features poorly utilized Andy, terrible pacing and an awfully lazy script that was very tiresome. Thankfully, the series became better going forward.
