Best Films from November 2023:

3. Dicks: The Musical

Dicks: The Musical could have been one of the best musicals of all time had it not been for that atrocious pro-incest ending that ruined everything. With that being said, I still had a blast watching this musical comedy that featured unforgettable characters, phenomenal humor and some very catchy and fun songs that I still listen to weeks after watching it. It’s a wonderfully campy and outrageous experiment.

2. The Creator

Gareth Edwards’ The Creator is an underrated 2023 movie that ended up having the best VFX in years. How the movie was filmed utilizing as little CGI and as many real life locations as possible was admirable and hopefully it will inspire other Hollywood movies in the future. The script is also excellent with its pro-A.I. messaging being different and unique for a SF feature. It’s a fun, superbly executed sci-fi action flick that is at times familiar, but mostly thrilling to watch.

1. The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes

This Hunger Games prequel was a blast to watch on the big screen. They adapted the source material so well in this instance while delivering one of the best entries in this series. It was wonderful being back in the world of Panem and having to witness the rise of the main franchise’s prime villain. Snow’s origin story was so well done, the acting performances were superb and the action was intense and quite brutal. The dramatically different third act was also surprisingly well handled and the movie as a whole is hugely underrated by the critics.

3. Haunted Mansion

Disney’s Haunted Mansion was a mixed bag of a movie that could and should have been so much better. While it has its memorable performers and solid visuals, the storytelling was slight and the film never quite achieved the entertainment factor that it should have with its solid premise.

2. Oppenheimer

Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer is one of his worst and most overrated movies. Yes, it looks good and it’s very well acted, but it’s chaotically edited, needlessly prolonged and overall quite boring. He focused on so many uninteresting personalities and side plots that he ended up suffocating the main subject in the process. It’s a movie that has nothing to say.

1. The Killer

This year was definitely not great for big name directors as evidenced by The Killer, which is the only David Fincher movie that I really disliked. It’s a giant mediocrity that does have a strong showing from Michael Fassbender, but it suffers from a terrible script, bad dialogue and annoying monologuing that constantly infuriated me. It was such a waste of time.
