Atlantis: Milo’s Return Movie Review

Atlantis: Milo’s Return is a 2003 animated science fiction film produced by Disneytoon Studios. It’s a very mediocre sequel.

I do not want the legacy of Atlantis

to be the destruction of it’s civilization

Atlantis: Milo’s Return Movie Review

First and foremost, I am not a fan of the original Atlantis movie. Many aren’t to be honest, which is understandable as that movie is only conceptually and visually stunning, but very badly plotted and imagined in characters. They set out to make a sequel because they tried making a television show, so they did not know what to do with these TV episodes.

That led to this movie, which is basically a stitched movie consisting of three television episodes only loosely connected into an incoherent whole. The first Kraken storyline is utterly forgettable despite holding potential in mythology. The second one with the Native Americans is the worst of the bunch as it has no thematic connection to the others whatsoever or to this entire world.

The third one is the best, though still I wondered what Asgard had to do with Atlantis. They just included all of the possible mythologies and famous stories without making them coherent whatsoever with this particular world. The ending is okay, but again not worth sitting out the previous storylines.

Atlantis: Milo’s Return Movie Review

Milo is once again forgettable in badly titled Atlantis: Milo’s Return while Kida is better developed here, though still very bland and boring. The other supporting characters continue to be one-note and overly silly with of course everybody having a quirk of his or her own. They are all unnecessary to the overall story. The visuals are solid, but far from the anime-inspired original. The same goes for the score and the overall storytelling, direction and dialogue.

Atlantis: Milo’s Return is one of the worst Disneytoon Studios sequels. The visuals and score are inferior, the characterization is weak and the storytelling is terrible as they basically stitched together three different television episodes into an incoherent, bland whole.

My Rating – 2
