Abominable Movie Review

Abominable is a 2019 animated adventure film from DreamWorks Animation. It’s a solid enough, but utterly unoriginal effort.

Abominable Movie Review

After discovering a Yeti on the roof of her apartment building, teenager Yi and her two friends embark on an epic quest to reunite the magical creature with his family. But to do so, they must stay one step ahead of a wealthy financier and a determined zoologist who want to capture the beast for their own gain.

It is crazy how we got three mythical creature movies in a span of one year or so. Abominable comes in close vicinity with ‘Missing Link’ and ‘Smallfoot’, and though inferior to the former, it is superior to the latter film.

The main problem it has is its overwhelming lack of originality or inventive elements as it lacks any. It’s a solid effort that is very competent through and through, but it’s never actually memorable or unique in any way, shape or form. It just moves along, it is sweet enough and at the end of the day quite forgettable.

It is distinctive in its Asian-American group of characters, and their family dynamic. That modern twist made the film unique in character perspective at least. And I really liked these characters. Yi is a confident protagonist, Peng is a well-developed brother of hers and the granny herself is very amusing.

However, no matter how well developed these characters are, and how their family dynamic and relationships are uniformly great, the others suffered as a result. The villains felt like an afterthought, and shamefully for a movie called Abominable, the yeti himself is very underdeveloped. He’s cute, but that’s about it as he serves no bigger purpose at all here.

Abominable has wonderful animation. The character design is admittedly odd at first, but I got accustomed to it later on, though the humans look great. I also liked the action sequences and how well they were executed and animated. The movie succeeds as a strong adventure for sure as it’s spirited and fun, but better pacing, scripting and more sophistication were much needed.

Abominable looks great, it’s quite a solid little adventure and it succeeds in its human characters with a refreshingly modern, well realized family at its core. But the titular creature suffered as a result as his development is weaker. The plot is also very straightforward and unimaginative while the whole execution is competent, but never truly great or memorable in any way.

My Rating – 3.5
