A Corny Concerto ReviewA Corny Concerto Review

A Corny Concerto is a 1943 animated short film from the Merry Melodies series. It is a pretty good, but admittedly disappointing short.

This is Warner Bros. response to Disney’s ‘Fantasia’, being literally the parody of it both in style and in execution. Elmer Fudd introduces the two segments and he did a great job at that. I loved his stuttering. Tales from the Vienna Woods is a better segment as it features Porky Pig and Bugs Bunny. Both are great here, but Bugs in female attire stole the show.

The Blue Danube is weaker though. It’s a parody of Disney’s ‘The Ugly Duckling’ and it’s not particularly successful at parodying that short as the gags aren’t all that clever or funny. The segment is fun for sure and it has its moments, but mostly the sophistication is lacking. The overall cartoon is beautifully animated and scored and the synchronization is absolutely terrific. I just wished for better scripting and humor.

A Corny Concerto is a very good film with gorgeous animation which well accompanies its classical score, but the issues with script and especially humor prevented it from becoming a classic that it was supposed to become.

My Rating – 4
