Tully is a 2018 drama film directed by Jason Reitman and starring Charlize Theron. It’s a pretty good, mostly satisfactory family drama.

It follows a woman who has a hard time with her third newborn child so she employs a nanny and suddenly her life turns for the better plus the two develop a strong friendship. This is a familiar, but strongly executed story that should prove especially relatable for all the hard-working mothers out there.

Although at first I found the film’s attitude toward having children awfully harsh and too negative, eventually they balanced it out by portraying both the good and the bad sides. But still, it proved a strong lesson for myself who is not well acquainted at all with the hardships of mothers.

It’s a well detailed film in that regard as it portrays motherhood meticulously, but that did lead to a somewhat slowly paced, slice-of-life film for better and for worse. The relationship between the two women is so well realized and the highlight of the film along with Charlize Theron’s powerhouse, truly remarkable performance that should bode well in the upcoming awards season.

The kids, though, should have been better developed. The same goes for the father. But the two women are the most important characters here and both are excellent for sure. The only problem I’ve had with the story lies in that sex scene which I found overly weird and I did not understand the point of it both in the context of the story and in the protagonist’s motifs.

The same goes for the car crash which is visually stunning, but it felt overly melodramatic. The movie is an unsuccessful mix of a familiar, traditional family drama and new, alternative, but overly crazy or melodramatic ideas that just don’t mash well together.

The acting is terrific across the board and Jason Reitman’s direction is pretty good, though I do prefer Theron’s and his previous collaboration ‘Young Adult’. Tully is emotionally hard-hitting and with mostly terrific dialogue, but it has its slow stretches and odd plot points which definitely backtracked the film’s progress quite a bit.

Tully is a pretty good, hard-hitting and relatable for mothers parental drama which is meticulous in its slice-of-life approach and phenomenally acted by reliably great Charlize Theron. It is seriously offset by a couple of implausible or odd plot points, but overall it offers a much needed glimpse into the many hardships of motherhood.
