Top Ten Schitt’s Creek Episodes

Throughout its 6 seasons and 80 episodes, Schitt’s Creek has had a fair share of classics. This Canadian sitcom is so much more than your regular sitcom as it can be dramatic and moving just as it is funny. It also genuinely developed its characters, and we saw them naturally grow into better people, which is why saying goodbye turned out to be so difficult. Choosing top ten episodes was rather hard. I tried to include both the comedic and the more dramatic installments, so here we go.

10. Open Mic

Throughout this season 4 episode, David is fearful of Patrick’s upcoming singing live in front of everyone, but when we witness what a great signer he is, and how beautifully he ended up serenading him, all of his fears ended in an instant. This moment of serenading was probably the most romantic scene in the entire series and quite possibly the show’s signature scene.

9. Motel Review

This is the season 3 episode where we met Patrick for the first time. From the very first scene, it was evident that he was into David a lot, and his teasing of him was so endearing and fun. The episode is also very entertaining in Moira’s subplot. She gets to work in a motel for a bit and she is annoyed by a very tedious guest. The scene where she acted out in front of him was comedy gold.

8. Honeymoon

This gem from the first season consists of two big parties, one for the young and one for the old crew. Both are excellent and they showcase the greatness of this show and how much it appeals to both young and old. My personal favorite is the party with the younger crew as that is where we get some juice relationship drama. Also, David’s relationship with Stevie was very complicated here, and him being pansexual was such an intriguing development.

7. Surprise Party

Surprise Party is a fantastic Moira showcase with her birthday surprise party being mined for laughs beautifully. She doesn’t at first know about the party, but then she learned about and she has to be pretend to be surprised. It just goes to show how great Catherine O’Hara is that she sold all of her scenes here with high confidence.

6. Happy Ending

The reason why Happy Ending worked so well lies not just in its emotional levity, but also in its humor. It never forgets to be funny and it was certainly a lot of fun seeing David panic over rain on his wedding day. The comedic highlight, though, was the scene with the dress as Alexis looked totally like a bride hilariously so. The wedding itself was so sweet, Moira was so funny officiating it, and the final moment in the show with the billboard honestly made me cry. It was a perfect finale that honored this beautiful series flawlessly.

5. Meet the Parents

You can see a pattern here. David and Patrick’s episodes take up most of this list, but for a good reason as this couple is one of the best gay couples in history. They steal the show always with their wonderfully romantic, realistic and moving relationship. This is where we get to meet Patrick’s parents, and the episode is both funny and emotional as it deals with coming out refreshingly subtly.

4. The Hike

This entire episode is terrific, but again our best couple is the highlight. Patrick takes David to a hike, where he ends up proposing him. It’s a wonderful, complex adventure that did not start off well (the bickering, the injury), but it was all worth it in the end as the proposal was genuinely emotional and highly memorable in its imagery.

3. Moira’s Nudes

An absolute Moira classic from the second season, this episodes deals with her seeking her old nudes on the Internet. The scene where she asked her children to look for them was hysterical, but the realization that she yearns for the old days when she was young and hot made for an empathetic, deep character showcase as well. It was all just phenomenally scripted.

2. Grad Night

This masterpiece of an episode brings every third season storyline to an earned happy ending. The motel business is thriving, Alexis is graduating and Moira gives a wonderful gesture to her. It was the first time when the family was starting to get back on their feet, but the relationship between mother and daughter was the heart of this particular episode. Their relationship was always strained, but here they reached great catharsis.

1. Happy Anniversary

Happy Anniversary is by far the greatest episode of the whole show. I adored this episode as it’s so moving, but never manipulatively so. All of this emotion was earned after spending two seasons with these people. Johnny telling off his past rich friends was utterly beautiful and containing rich sentiment about living in a small town and how its residents can be great people regardless of their far from narrow backgrounds. And the final scene where the family expresses their love for one another for the first time for real moved me how sweet it was. There would be better seasons afterward, but this is the peak of the show in my book.

Honorable Mentions:

The Olive BranchTina Turner’s The Best. David lip-syncing to this song for his boyfriend. Need I say more? It was hugely entertaining and incredibly romantic.

Start Spreading the News – The penultimate episode of the show was so heartbreaking as we got to hear the family was going to separate entirely. The scene on the car is the highlight.

Housewarming – This is a terrific party gone wrong episode that explored jealousy in David and Patrick’s relationship amusingly so.

The Premiere – This last season episode finally sees the premiere of Moira’s Crows movie. That red carpet fiasco was absolutely hilarious.

Escape Room – A rare irreverent episode from its season, Escape Room gets the gang inside the titular room and the results are so much fun. Alexis showing off how smart she is was the highlight.
