Top Ten Katy Perry Songs

Katy Perry is undoubtedly one of the best female singers working in today’s music industry, certainly when it comes to the commercial pop genre. Like Lady Gaga, so many of her songs are instantly memorable and fun so making this list was not as easy as I thought it would be. Here are my top ten choices for her best songs with some honorable mentions as well.

10. California Gurls

California Gurls is certainly way too silly and stupid in its music video, but the number itself, though not great, is pretty entertaining with a chorus that somehow really reminds you of summer so it’s best to be played during that season.

9. Last Friday Night

This is another slight, standard number from Perry in the same vein as the above entry, but it features a better, much more fun chorus that you can’t help but sing to it. But again, this is still the point in the list where we haven’t reached her true, memorable classics.

8. It Takes Two

I really like It Takes Two which is by far one of the most underrated songs on this list. I respect it for being different to Katy’s more usual fare and it really works as this beautifully sung, deeper song with a particularly effective, wonderful refrain. It really needs more love out there.

7. Dark Horse

Now, Dark Horse is obviously a major hit from hers and I do like it quite a bit. It’s quite different in its black magic imagery and very unique composition, but overall I find it a bit overrated as it gets gimmicky and repetitive after more listenings. But in terms of uniqueness, it’s a winner.

6. I Kissed a Girl

I Kissed a Girl is one of the first major Katy Perry hits that brought her to the worldwide fame that she still lives through. I find its sexually suggestive lesbian lyrics particularly powerful and influential, but overall the song, though fun, also gets repetitive after a while.

5. Hot n Cold

Another one of her earlier hits, Hot n Cold isn’t deep as her greatest numbers, but it’s by far one of her most entertaining songs with such an instantly memorable chorus that you can’t get out of your head for sure.

4. Part of Me

I really liked the music video for this song as for sure her sports are reliably great for the most part, but the song itself is excellent throughout. It has a great empowering message and its beat is infectious. The great lyrics and rhythm go hand in hand in creating a big pop hit overall.

3. E. T.

Just like Dark Horse, E. T. is a refreshing, much more different song for both her and the overall industry, but this one is so much better as it’s simply immensely catchy. The entirety of it so fun while its lyrics are different and memorable. I adore its very different, cool and modern beat.

2. Firework

When you think about Katy Perry, Firework almost certainly comes to your mind first and for many great reasons as it’s a deeper, more meaningful number fueled by a terrific music video, wonderful singing from Perry and a timeless quality to it. It is the number one pick almost for everyone expect me.

1. The One That Got Away

Yes, I have to go with a much different number one choice and I pick for it this hugely, shamefully underappreciated classic from Perry. The One That Got Away needs more love, that goes without saying, because it’s undoubtedly Katy’s deepest, most emotional song with truly tragic lyrics and a heartbreaking music video. Its beat is infectious in its entirety and yes, the song is catchy and memorable throughout, but again her singing coupled with the tragic lyrics make this song her greatest and her most powerful.

Honorable Mentions:

Roar – I really like Roar. Yes, it’s cheesy and typical, but undeniably fun and catchy with a particularly dazzling music video.

Teenage DreamTeenage Dream is catchy, entertaining and solid overall, but a bit overrated when all is said and done as it’s not as memorable.

Waking Up in Vegas – This one is a bit different in its style and beat, but it mostly ended up being quite amusing, especially in chorus.

This MomentThis Moment is an inferior companion piece to It Takes Two as this more serious and elegant offering from her, but much less memorable.

Wide AwakeWide Awake is the one of two songs here which are just fun and meant for nightclubs/shopping malls only in its approach, but instantly memorable for sure.

Chained to the RhythmChained to the Rhythm is another one of those songs, but much less memorable than the one above, though still perfectly solid.
