Top Ten Film Posters of 2022

2022 was a rather weak year for movies, but at least when it comes to the posters, we got some excellent ones. For this list I am only going to take into account the quality of the posters and the movies themselves, so some of these films I strongly disliked, but they had to be included judged solely by the poster, so here we go.

10. Speak No Evil

Admittedly, I have a thing for the color orange in movie posters. When you couple that with the color blue, you’ve got a beautiful combination that was made for this marketing tool. Speak No Evil is surely the most disturbing movie of the year and the poster sells that as we see a desperate family trapped in the car in the middle of nowhere.

9. Prey

This is what I’m talking about. This is how all posters for blockbusters should look like. We don’t need overstuffed garbage with countless characters that fill the poster to the point where it becomes an eyesore. Prey’s poster emphasizes the primal nature of this amazing movie with the positioning of the hunter and the monster being just perfect.

8. The Fabelmans

I don’t care for The Fabelmans. I find it to be one of Spielberg’s weakest efforts. With that being said, this is a list of best movie posters, not movies, so I had to include it here. A man walking on the street with the movie stills hanging above his head constituted this very unique imagery that is timeless in its appeal.

7. All That Breathes

I was largely disappointed with this documentary, but the poster is undoubtedly very cool and beautiful. It emphasizes the relationship between the kite and the scientist wonderfully. It’s one of those posters that makes you want to see the film immediately, which makes it highly successful.

6. Athena

This poster isn’t on most best lists for this year, but it really should be as it’s absolutely gorgeous in its striking imagery of a man throwing fire while the flames had already erupted on the low end of the image. The positioning of the title’s letters was also stellar. It’s a shame that I ended up not liking this movie at all, though.

5. EO

EO wasn’t a great film by any means, but this Polish Oscar nominee received a terrific poster that is unlike any other this year in its very stark red color and the donkey positioned on the right looking right at us. It’s one of the most recognizable and memorable posters on this list.

4. Pearl

Ti West’s Pearl was a superb prequel to his movie X, both released this year. Pearl’s poster takes the cake as the best horror movie poster this year. Not only do we have the crazy Mia Goth’s protagonist with a disturbed look, but also gorgeous blood-colored lettering beneath it. It genuinely resembled posters from the sixties, especially those of the Roger Corman variety.

3. Blonde

I hated Blonde. I really despised it. However, there is no doubt it – its poster is impressive. The close-op of Ana de Armas’ face and the look in her eyes perfectly embodied Marilyn Monroe and I loved the font of the title too. It’s an instantly memorable, simple image that stays with you.

2. Men

I also really hated Men, so there is a pattern here unfortunately. But this poster is something else. A woman standing at the entry of the ominous tunnel is something that seems as if it would belong firmly in a Tarkovsky movie. The trees above and the puddle below made for such a detailed, cool image. It’s so inherently inviting and intriguing that the end product being so bad was even more of a disappointment.

1. Babylon

Babylon the movie is a lot. It’s an epic spectacle that featured so much audio-visual excess and that excess is wonderfully showcased in its poster, which features Margot Robbie being carried by numerous people at this glamorous Hollywood party. The lighting is gorgeous, her dress is beautiful and period-accurate and the poster is simply the most striking of this entire year. Thus, it takes the deserved number one spot.

Honorable Mentions:

TarLydia Tar conducting while we see her from below made for a very unique poster for this excellent drama.

Everything Everywhere All at Once – I dislike this film, but the poster’s overstuffed nature actually works to sell the final product deftly and it’s also pleasingly colorful.

Crimes of the FutureThis SF movie has many interesting posters, but the one focusing on the body with the distorted positions of the body parts fits perfectly with the movie’s disturbing plot.

BrosThis gay romantic comedy rightfully received a hilarious poster where two men touch each other’s butts. It’s a silly, but undeniably fun poster.

CorsageThe image of this queen watching at the crown above her was so interesting and the other poster where she shows the middle finger was also great.
