Top Ten Dexter’s Laboratory Segments

Dexter’s Laboratory is a classic animated series from the nineties thanks to its unforgettable characters and great, mature humor. It consists of segments instead of episodes, segments of about seven minutes usually. The show has a lot of phenomenal stories and I tried to include all four seasons on my list. So here are my top ten Dexter’s Laboratory segments.

10. Chess Mom

The kids’ mother is not as memorable as their dad is, but still she is still quite interesting and not your stereotypical mother. She did get to show her heroic or goofy side in a couple of episodes and the best of the bunch is this story where she embarrasses Dexter by cheering his chess game so loudly. It’s such a sweet, amusing segment.

9. Bad Cable Manners

So as I’ve said above, Dexter’s dad is just a whole lot of fun. He is very goofy and at times even ridiculous which is why I liked most of his segments. This is one of his best as it was so funny watching him attempt to fix the broken television to disastrous results. It is a humorous showcase of how Dexter is so much smarter than his dumb parents.

8. Dexter’s Little Dilemma

This is one of the more intriguing and intricate stories where Dexter actually managed to shrink his parents to a much smaller size and put them in a small house and he tries to make them not realize that. Naturally, this story features a lot of funny situations and moments, but the sheer attention to detail is the standout aspect here.

7. Trick or Treehouse

This is an absolutely hilarious part. I loved it. Whenever the show focuses on Dee Dee and Dexter, it was bound to be great. And this is one of their better installments. It shows us how Dexter can be so curious as he just is dying to see what Dee Dee is doing with her friends in a tree house to very comedic results.

6. Project Dee Dee

This episode showcases Dexter’s dependence on Dee Dee which was necessary for us the audience to see and simply lovable, not to mention very funny. So she is doing her science experiment for school and doesn’t want his help and he is pretending at first that he doesn’t care, but is quickly frustrated that she doesn’t need him. It’s a classic.

5. The Muffin King

This is by far the finest ever episode concerning Dexter’s Dad. His wife made cookies for the whole family and he is just obsessed with those muffins so much that he will go out of his way to get them before night. The entire episode is so funny, but the highlight is that devious, unexpected finale.

4. Mind Over Chatter

How could I not love this story? As is evidenced by my first couple of choices, I prefer my Dexter’s Laboratory the most in the experiment episodes. Here his plan to read his dad’s mind backfires and suddenly everyone else can hear his thoughts and thus he has to navigate all the various difficulties during his school day. It’s a great situational comedy.

3. The Big Cheese

Here Dexter can only say Omelette du fromage which is an incorrect translation of cheese omelette. This French word is so funny and especially when spoken by Dexter (he has always had a great voice) and again this is a great situational comedy storyline with silly, but rewarding situation after situation.

2. Star Spangled Sidekicks

This is one of the rare superhero episodes that worked for me as I usually really disliked them in this particular show. But this one worked because it got the superheroics and the feeling of wanting to be a superhero right, but most importantly it showed Dee Dee’s care for Dexter for the first time leading to a meaningful, endearing episode.

1. A Failed Lab Experiment

How can I go with any other choice for my number one spot? Yes, A Failed Lab Experiment is undoubtedly the very best that Dexter’s Laboratory has to offer. I loved it because it is so risqué for a children’s show to have Dexter create a device where he can see through materials and thus he sees his entire family naked in various uncompromising, horrible positions. This was so unexpected to witness in what is basically a cartoon and thus I loved every mature, hilarious second of it.

Honorable Mentions:

Game Over – This is a phenomenal gaming story where Dee Dee has to save Dexter from the game and I loved how she had the leverage for once.

Dee Dee and the Man – This episode is great just for the scene where Dexter fires Dee Dee by giving this hilarious, typically crazily voiced Dexter speech.

Accent You Hate – Speaking of voices, this story finally makes fun of Dexter’s silly, made up accent in a very amusing fashion by giving him an accent bully.

You can get the first (and the best) season of this classic show on Amazon.
