Best Films from May 2018:

3. 3 Idiots

I did watch some very good films during this month including ‘Wadjda’ which did not make it on the list, but this Bollywood flick did. It’s such a wonderful movie which is actually very important as it showcases the extreme difficulties of Indian faculties in such a heartbreaking manner. But the movie never forgets to be fun as it features great humor as well. The highlights are the three main characters and their wonderful friendship.

2. Fanny and Alexander

This Swedish drama is without any doubt the very best that Ingmar Bergman has ever made. Yes, I am usually not a big fan of his, but here I fell in love with what he concocted pretty quickly. That’s because this historical drama is so immersive in its mystery and intricate storytelling while featuring memorable characters, fantastic cinematography and a great atmosphere to it.

1. A Quiet Place

And the number one goes to this horror classic which it’s going to become for sure in the future. John Krasinski made one hell of a film here with a lot of heart to it, an intriguing alien design with amazing VFX and pretty effective pacing and runtime. The standout of course is its silent approach and the immense originality of its story. It features many instantly unforgettable sequences which are so intense and brilliantly executed. That’s why it’s one of the best that the horror genre has to offer.

3. Volver

Volver unfortunately had to have a place on this list. Yes, it’s Almodovar, but it’s one of his weaker efforts. Here he basically made an overly extended soap opera episode with overly silly story and situations to it. Penelope Cruz did deliver a fantastic performance, but even she couldn’t save the soapiness that is this movie.

2. Quantum of Solace

Quantum of Solace was such a major disappointment after stellar ‘Casino Royale’. Yes, some of its action is fun and it looks good, but the movie is so incredibly frenetic in pacing and frustratingly shot in some of the action scenes that it becomes too annoying, too bloody and violent and just subpar overall.

1. Begin the Beguine

Easily the worst film I watched in May is this Spanish bore of a drama. Nothing ever happens in Begin the Beguine which also isn’t as meditative or as moving as it thinks it is. It may please some people, especially the older ones, but to me it was a giant waste of time and the fact that it won an Oscar is ridiculous. It’s one of the most forgettable foreign Oscar winners.
