There’s Something About a Soldier Review

There’s Something About a Soldier is a 1934 animated short film from the Betty Boop series. It is a solid, though silly short.

Betty Boop recruits for the Army by offering inductees a kiss. The recruits march off to war with a force of giant mosquitoes. As someone who absolutely despises mosquitoes, I definitely related to this movie. Having mosquitoes for an enemy force was silly, but undeniably funny. The action scenes and gags were thoroughly well executed and fun.

The first half is where Betty gets to recruit soldiers and kiss them. There is a song that she sings here that was quite amusing and she gets to have another fling with her by now regular boyfriend Fred, who here got the biggest role so far. That moment that highlighted his fat was hilarious. The animation is stellar and so is the score, but the plot is nothing to write home about and the movie felt too different in its two very distinct halves.

There’s Something About a Soldier is memorable and fun with a great use of Fred, but it needed a stronger script.

My Rating – 3.8
