The Wabbit Who Came to Supper is a 1942 animated short film from the Merry Melodies series. It is a very good flick.

Elmer Fudd is about to gain a huge inheritance, but he must not harm any animals, especially rabbits. Bugs Bunny, being an asshole that he is, of course instantly takes a big advantage of that development and moves into his house to torment him. This premise is familiar for cartoons, but it’s perfect for this duo and they both delivered, though admittedly the second half left a lot to be desired in terms of the humor.

But the plot is well realized, the action is particularly strong and the animation is again reliably great with Elmer’s house being warm and inviting. Elmer here looks half-fat, half-skinny so it’s obviously a transitional period for him. Bugs himself looks too skinny and odd. In terms of character design, the film is all over the place, but in terms of characterization, both characters are terrific and well used.

The Wabbit Who Came to Supper features a well executed premise with good action and great character moments for Bugs and Elmer.

My Rating – 4
