The Ren & Stimpy Show Season 2 Review

The second season of The Ren & Stimpy Show is an improvement upon the first one, and in particular the second half of it is so good.

The Ren & Stimpy Show Season 2 Review

In the Army is a solid army episode that is fun without being particularly memorable. Powdered Toast Man is fine, but way too odd in its premise to be enjoyed more. Ren’s Toothache is a lot of fun with a very strong premise well executed and Stimpy stole the show here. Out West is an atmospheric, though forgettable western.

Rubber Nipple Salesman is way too weird, but still funny how sexual in nature it is with all the nipple action in it. Sven Hoek has a very fine use of Ren and his anger issues, but admittedly more could have been done with this great premise. Haunted House is also very atmospheric and solid in horror elements, and Mad Dog Hoek is quite forgettable itself.

Big Baby Scams finds the two trade babies to get better life, but various shenanigans they get into are amusing to watch. Dog Show is the most authentic episode so far in its animal show story with many very amusing, gross-out animal scenes.

Son of Stimpy is an absolute classic! Yes, it’s disgusting, but in the best Ren & Stimpy way possible. So basically Stimpy farts and creates a creature called Stinky. The episode thus made fun of melodramatic, emotional Hollywood tropes by having these two ridiculous creatures share an emotional connection, and the results are instantly memorable and hilarious.

Monkey See, Monkey Don’t! is fine, but forgettable. Fake Dad finds the two as parents, and the results are suitably amusing and different in the two’s parenting methods. The Great Outdoors is a fine adventure episode, but inferior to the next such one.

The Cat That Laid the Golden Hairball is absolutely disgusting, but this time it’s too gross that it affected the enjoyment of the segment. It’s original and crazy, but still watching Stimpy lick the hairs of all characters was incredibly disgusting. Stimpy’s Fan Club has a good relationship between the two and a fine jealousy plot, but A Visit to Anthony is not that engaging.

And here we come to the best episode so far on the show which is of course The Royal Canadian Kilted Yaksmen. Hilarious and very memorable in setting and characters, this episode is also so well animated and featuring a terrific, iconic rendition of the Canadian anthem with suitably gross-out parody lyrics.

Overall, I liked this season more than the first one. Some episodes are weaker and not all that great, but a couple are classics, especially the two which I strongly remember from childhood.

Worst Episodes: Monkey See, Monkey Don’t! and A Visit to Anthony.

Best Episodes: Dog Show, Son of Stimpy and The Royal Canadian Kilted Yaksmen.

My Rating – 3.9
