The Coin Review

The Coin is a 2020 animated short film directed by Siqi Song. It’s a very artistic flick.

A young woman loses a jar on her journey to a new country, which contains the lucky coins she has been collecting growing up. Her life in a new country begins with a search to find the coin. Siqi Song has previously directed the great ‘Sister’, which touched upon one-child policy in China. This one is about their coin tradition, but it is largely about family and hometown and how difficult it is to start a new life and emigrate to another country.

The metaphor worked for me and the animation is amazing. The wool here is truly incredible, the short has that very old-fashioned, knitted, warm feel to it that I really dug, but the problem is that the runtime is too short and the movie just sort of ends with no stronger statement nor conclusion. There are some stellar fantastical scenes here, but I needed more memorable plot points throughout.

The Coin is great in metaphor, but slight in the overall plot. The animation is amazing and the movie is very charming nonetheless.

My Rating – 3.9
