Sylvester and Tweety in Cagey Capers is a 1994 platform video game from Time Warner Interactive made for Sega Genesis. It’s an easy, but wonderfully cartoony game.

In this game, Sylvester must chase Tweety throughout multiple settings. The gameplay consists of the cat chasing the bird, the bird getting away from spot to spot, and the level ends once he is permanently caught. Usually, that happens on the very high altitude as most levels require some sort of climbing. And I personally loved the climbing elements here, though some of it was clunky as you really can’t tell those climbing objects apart from those which are just background objects.

There are very few levels in this game, below ten. And that’s a big problem here. The repeat value isn’t as strong and the length is way too short, ridiculously so. Of the levels, the house and yard levels are very easy, but the train level is very complicated and probably the longest and most puzzling of them all. I also really liked the visually intriguing alley level.

The lab levels are excellent as they incorporate Tweety becoming a monster into the gameplay, which is thus much more difficult to get through. This level adapted one of the best Sylvester cartoons ‘Hyde and Go Tweet’ and they adapted it wonderfully. The monster form really posed some serious threat, but still the game provides you with too many lives, so it’s fairly easy to finish as a whole. As for the ship level, it’s not the best developed level, but it has its interesting quirks for sure.

The controls in this video game are admittedly rather messy. Well, the controls themselves work, but the protagonist’s jumping and running can be very inconsistent as you cannot really rely on Sylvester when it comes to quick moves and quick jumping. He’s so unreliable, in fact, that the game is best played as slowly as possible.

Where this game excels at has to be in the area of animation. The graphics here remind me so much of the golden age of the Looney Tunes cartoons that it was very nostalgic to me. The character designs are truthful to their original designs from the shorts and the movements are mostly quite polished. I simply loved the animation with solid background work and a gorgeous cartoony sensibility to it. This is how animation should be adapted into video games.

But the sound isn’t nearly as strong. Yes, the opening theme uses the Looney Tunes opening well, and certainly the couple of lines spoken by the two iconic characters ring true for them and are so funny, but most of the other sound effects are clunkier in nature and cheaper overall.

Sylvester and Tweety in Cagey Capers needed to have been more difficult as only a couple of levels here are truly quite difficult, but others are all either too easy or too short. But I did appreciate the game’s level design, which is mostly quite good, and the puzzles can be really interesting and well thought out.

I loved the obstacles with Granny and Hector being particularly fun. I loved the hiding and distracting incorporated with those opponents, but they needed to have appeared more often nonetheless. The game runs smoothly, but the world building left a lot to be desired. I still had a lot of fun playing this game, and in particular it felt like walking into a gorgeous, fun cartoon.

Sylvester and Tweety in Cagey Capers is flawed in terms of overly short length and unimpressive difficulty, but the gameplay is still a lot of fun, the characters are truthfully portrayed and the animation is absolutely wonderful throughout. It’s a messy, but undeniably amusing, charming gaming experience.

My Rating – 3.8
