Secret of the Wings Movie Review

Secret of the Wings is a 2012 animated fantasy film from Disneytoon Studios. It is the fourth installment in the Tinker Bell franchise and an okay one overall.

Out of curiosity, Tinker Bell ventures into Winter Woods, a place that the warmer fairies are forbidden from. Her attempt leads her to Periwinkle, her twin, and the two discover an amazing secret. This movie is simplistic, but the theme of global warming is well handled for smaller audiences and the environmental feel of this entire franchise continues to impress.

But the movie simply felt too similar to ‘Frozen’. I know that it was released a year before that now iconic Disney flick, but the relationship between Anna and Elsa is much more interesting than the one presented here. Tinker and Periwinkle are simply too nice and too dull to register as an interesting sisterly couple. They are sweet and cute, but forgettable.

Secret of the Wings is definitely enjoyable. It’s much better than the first two flicks in this series, but it doesn’t come close to the third entry because obviously the storyline is weaker this time around. Nothing here is thematically all that interesting nor do we get much of a conflict, but the flick still runs smoothly and it is overall quite fine.

The animation continues to improve and the highlight of the movie is seeing the winter land in this universe with some of the ice imagery being truly beautiful. The soundtrack is also okay for what it is, though hardly memorable. The characters needed more work, but they aren’t annoying at least, they are just not all that memorable.

Secret of the Wings is a fine fourth entry in the Tinker Bell franchise. It is familiar, far from eventful and it is way too simplistic, but the animation is pretty good, the world building is solid and the characters are okay, though far from great.

My Rating – 3
