Schitt’s Creek Season 6 Review

The sixth season of Schitt’s Creek is another terrific season of television and such a wonderful ending to this beautiful show.

Schitt's Creek Season 6 Review

Smoke Signals is the weakest episode of this entire season and it wasn’t a great start. It signals everything that is wrong with this season – David’s obsession with his wedding and too many such storylines – but at least some moments were very funny with the pig farm twist being hilarious. The Incident is one of those situational comedy episodes that entirely work. Yes, David wetting himself because of excitement was too silly, but Moira streaming her conversation about it live was hilarious. Her lack of knack for tech is so funny here.

The Job Interview is at its best in David and Stevie’s subplot where they apply for flight attendants. Their rivalry was so much fun here. Maid of Honour is pretty good in all storylines, but the one with The Crows movie trailer was hilarious. The Premiere is such a funny episode. I just loved the entire Crows release story in this season, and here it culminated in that fantastic red carpet premiere that went wrong in such an amusing fashion.

The Wingman deals with Bob getting back to dating after his wife left him. It was a solid storyline this season, but still I have never cared much for his character. Alexis and Moira working together, though, was a wonderful development during this season. Moira Rose is at its best in the moments where David and Moira taste a lot of wine and get drunk. Their dynamic together was always terrific.

The Presidential Suite is quite fun in the two older couples as they were otherwise shortchanged this season, but here both couples excelled. The episode, though, is important mostly for endings things off between Alexis and Ted, and I have to say that I really felt their break-up. It was genuinely sad to see this almost series-long couple end things, but it was done very tastefully.

Rebound is again very fun in Moira’s subplot, but Johnny here is the standout as he interferes in Alexis’s love life thankfully so. His care for her was so moving to witness here. Sunrise, Sunset makes the fullest use of Moira’s trashy soap opera from the past so far. We get the kids binging it here and the highlight is listening to the crazy plot points throughout.

Escape Room is just so much fun! It’s so entertaining, in fact, that it made me yearn for more such purely entertaining, irreverent episodes in this otherwise overly dramatic season. Alexis showing off just how smart and resourceful she could be under pressure was both very funny and rewarding. The Pitch honors Johnny so well in a season that is mostly devoid of great storylines surrounding him. It was just wonderful seeing Roland acknowledge him and fight for him so hardly.

Start Spreading the News brings back to mind the end of first season, but unlike that development, here unfortunately the family is going to say goodbye to each other. And I was heartbroken, but it was still wonderful that Moira and Johnny would go back to work on her show, Alexis will be back in NYC and David deciding to stay with Patrick in Schitt’s Creek was just beautiful to witness.

Happy Ending is an amazing finale that made me cry, that last moment with the billboard made me happy cry as it was emotionally rewarding and a nice callback to a previous season. Although I personally found David’s obsession with the wedding highly unlikable throughout this season where he was back to his unlikable roots, the wedding itself ended up being undeniably romantic and gorgeous in its entirety.

Overall, I am devastated that this show had to end. Rarely did it impact me as much, but I am sorely going to miss not just the show, but all of its residents as I grew to care for them all. Thankfully, the last season and the finale were worthy of the show’s greatness.

Worst Episodes: Smoke Signals and The Wingman.

Best Episodes: The Premiere, Escape Room, Start Spreading the News and Happy Ending.

My Rating – 4.3
