The fifth season of Schitt’s Creek continues the tradition of each season progressively getting better with this one being a major improvement upon its predecessors.

The Crowening is a fun first episode with Moira’s scenes in Bosnia being so entertaining. As a Serb myself, I found all of the scenes in this season where she boasted about Bosnia and spoke in some Serbian words simply hilarious. They always got me by surprise and the entire Crows movie arc was perfect for Moira this season as it provided great comedy fodder. Love Letters is also a pretty good episode with the hostage subplot being the funniest one.

The Plant introduces Stevie’s boyfriend to the mix, and the two ended up breaking things off as he only saw her as a fun girl for sex and not much else. That led to a heartbreak for her, but overall this season was Stevie’s best so far as we really got to feel her pain and frustrations. The Dress is also a good one, though probably the least memorable of this bunch.

Housewarming sees the gay couple settle down together in an apartment, which was a wonderful new development. However, Ted got drunk and very loose. Him kissing David led to a lot of craziness that was hilarious to follow. Rock On! is the funniest in Johnny’s very awkward, painfully so subplot.

A Whisper of Desire also is a great Johnny showcase where he thinks a woman is after him, but his thoughts were misguided throughout. The Hospies is at its best in Alexis’ audition for Moira’s Cabaret show. Her terrible singing, but obviously immense charisma made that scene so much fun to watch, and I found the entire show storyline for this season perfect for Moira.

The M.V.P. sees David having to play baseball and the results were quite funny. Johnny helping his son to win was incredibly sweet while Ronnie’s immense rivalry with Patrick throughout the season was a comedic gem to follow. Roadkill is awkward and funny in both of its very different, but both successful storylines.

Meet the Parents is such a wonderful episode and it’s the greatest part of this season in my opinion. That’s because it’s a coming out episode that is different from all the rest by being so drama-free. David and Johnny accidentally outing Patrick to his parents led to a hilarious situational comedy that only got better as it moved along. It led to that wonderfully romantic final scene between the two that just goes to show what an amazing couple they are.

The Roast is hilarious in Johnny’s comedy roasting story where he got to showcase how funny he can be, but also how painfully unfunny he could be at times. This is his best episode of the season and the same goes for Roland who made fun of him so amusingly.

As for The Hike, I honestly did not expect that proposal to happen at all, which is why I was delighted by it. The entire hiking part was perfectly executed, going from reluctant to messy to downright beautiful in its final proposal scene at the viewpoint. It was earned emotionally speaking and so moving. I also loved Alexis’ development here as she has to decide whether she wants to accompany Ted to the Galapagos Islands or stay with her family. Although Life Is a Cabaret isn’t the best finale so far, it’s still very fun, wonderful and especially meaningful in Stevie’s blossoming as a star and sensation. Her arc throughout the season was truly terrific.

Overall, I absolutely adored this season. Some episodes are only pretty good, but many are downright excellent. Each character got their moment to shine with Moira being so funny throughout, and David and Patrick continuing their amazing romance.

Worst Episodes: The Dress and Love Letters.

Best Episodes: Housewarming, Meet the Parents and The Hike.

My Rating – 4.4
