Save Ralph Review

Save Ralph Review

Save Ralph is a 2021 animated short film written and directed by Spencer Susser. It is a very persuasive, heartbreaking short.

Following Ralph in a mockumentary type fashion, the movie depicts rabbits as they wait to be tested for human cosmetics. Seeing this rabbit with his eyes swollen was just infuriating and tragic to witness. This is clearly propaganda movie, there is no question about it. It is overly short, very limited in scope and it felt too much like a pamphlet instead of a true story, but still this message is immensely powerful and it needs to be heard.

The short is important as it offers us a view into this horrible practice through the eyes of an animated rabbit in a truly ingenious move by the creators. By making the rabbit so cute, it is even more heartbreaking to watch what happens to him, but in live-action it would have been too unbearable maybe, so this was the only option viable. The stop-motion animation is gorgeous here with a lot of great detail while the voice from from Taika Waititi was per usual excellent.

Save Ralph is propaganda short, but an important one as it promotes banning cosmetics testing on animals. It’s a heartbreaking movie.
