Rayman Adventures Game Review

Rayman Adventures is a 2015 2D sidescroller platform video game released for Android and iOS devices. It truly shines in certain areas, but it’s very problematic in some other aspects.

Unlike the previous games in the Rayman franchise that were released for Android devices, this one is rather different and not just in terms of scope, but also in the gameplay mechanic overall. Those first games only featured one control, but this one is different in that it includes more controls, and the execution is so messy that it was ultimately not worth it to expand the control options.

You swipe in the opposite direction if you want to change direction, meaning that the direction isn’t fixed, which is fine, but it only complicates things further for your overall enjoyment of the game. You can also tap one side of the screen to attack and the other to jump. Again, this all sounds great on paper, but in execution not so much. The game is confusing at times as you want to jump, but then Rayman attacks and vice versa. It was confusing and needlessly complicated and it made it difficult to pass some levels, which is troublesome as the levels are already rather difficult to beat.

Speaking of the levels, they are excellent. The game’s world building is terrific and the aesthetic is fantastic. The level design is tremendous as the levels are uniformly beautifully rendered, well imagined and populated by interesting gameplay mechanics and hidden bonuses etc. The difficulty level is also quite high while the goal to collect everything every single time is rendered almost insurmountable, which to me was a good thing as I like a challenge in my games.

The worlds are so much fun and all are so appealing visually that it was marvelous to behold. It was almost on par with the Rayman games on PC, which I did not expect, but was pleasantly surprised. I adored Olympus Maximus. The architecture there was gorgeous and the Greek melodies made it atmospheric and charming. Medieval Mayhem is also very strong while Sea of Serendipity is appealing and fun, but a bit too difficult.

The graphics are fantastic, the character animation is phenomenal and the soundtrack is truly amazing as is the overall sound. Technically speaking, Rayman Adventures is a feat and it’s difficult to find any flaws in that regard, but it’s far from exciting in terms of repeat value or extended interest unfortunately.

For a game that was intended to be epic in world and options, most aren’t all that well utilized, which personally frustrated me. I liked the Incrediballs a lot as they were useful power-ups that you absolutely need if you are to collect everything, but the feeding of them was too demanding and the whole Sacred Tree was a good and cute idea, but not all that well executed in the overall gameplay and its importance is overrated. And another problem lies in the game’s huge world that is only fabricated to feel huge, but in reality once you pass a certain level, you are bound to repeat the same levels that are just disguised as being different.

Rayman Adventures is a mess of a game that is amazing in graphics, soundtrack and world building, but also definitely problematic in overly complicated, not that well implemented control scheme and too many not that well incorporated options overall. The game is fun to play, but not for too long. It looks and sounds fantastic and the core gameplay is intact, but the execution of its more ambitious side elements was quite flawed.

My Rating – 3.7
