Ranking SpongeBob SquarePants Seasons

SpongeBob SquarePants is still very much alive with new seasons coming, but I myself have only seen the first seven seasons. After the seventh one, I quit the show due to its really low quality at the time, thus I am going to rank these seven seasons in what turned out to be one of the most obvious, straightforward rankings out there.

7. Season 7

This was the point in the show where I had to quit as the series became so frustratingly mediocre to handle. Only a couple of episodes are solid here, but most are just very annoying, childish and/or ridiculous, not to mention tiresome. It also doesn’t use its characters properly at all.

SpongeBob SquarePants Season 7 Review

Best Moment – The best moment in this season comes from the episode The Masterpiece, one of the best of this weak season. Squidward made this amusing statue of Krabs and it was very funny and quite memorable.

6. Season 6

Overall, I really did not care for this season. Other than some very good Squidward and Plankton installments, most of the episodes are either annoying and silly or too forgettable and familiar. Everything that I have said above also applies here, but this one takes the edge because it has more good episodes in it, but still their number has also dwindled unfortunately.

Best MomentPlankton’s Regular is such an amazing episode where he gets a regular customer only to realize that Karen bought him off in order to make him feel better. That moment where she confessed that was so sweet as she truly cares for the poor fellow.

5. Season 5

This was a turning point for the show, of course a turning point for the worse. Up until this point it was at least solid, but here the characters started behaving too ridiculously and the episodes became progressively more childish and silly. It still has its fair share of good installments, though, and a couple are downright excellent.

SpongeBob SquarePants Season 5 Review

Best Moment – One of those great episodes is Friend or Foe, an essential installment where we get to see the backstory of Plankton and Mr. Krabs’ rivalry. The highlight was following their differing versions of the story and how big of a liar both of them are.

4. Season 4

The fourth season started off so strong with many great episodes starring Plankton and Krabs in particular. The humor was still pretty good at this point. However, the second half of this run became overly silly and cartoony, resulting in this mixed bag of a season that is still more good than bad for sure.

SpongeBob SquarePants Season 4 Review

Best Moment – The episode where Mr. Krabs tries to make money out of a wishing well by stealing its contents was just hilarious. It was so funny when Squidward himself joined SpongeBob deep in the well.

3. Season 3

This is a terrific season of SpongeBob SquarePants and the last great season before this show became middling in quality. Yes, some characters are underutilized (Sandy in particular), but Krabs and SpongeBob are great here and Squidward is fantastic, gaining many classic episodes under his belt.

SpongeBob SquarePants Season 3 Review

Best Moment – There is just so much greatness to choose from here. The snowball fight was terrific as were all Squidward episodes here, but the highlight was the episode where he stayed at SpongeBob’s. The moment where SpongeBob berated him to find work was hysterical.

2. Season 2

This was a toss-up for me as both the first and the second season are amazing, but ultimately the second takes the second spot as it was only slightly weaker. There were a lot of classic episodes here, the run was superb mostly and all characters were at this point still amazingly realized with Sandy being one of the highlights.

SpongeBob SquarePants Season 2 Review

Best MomentMrs. Puff was fantastic in this great season for her with her backstory being so much fun and quite revelatory, but the best moment has to be the ending of Bubble Buddy. That twist finale was unexpected and just incredible to witness.

1. Season 1

The first season takes the first spot at the end of the day and mostly due to the greatest world building and imagination employed, and that would only go downhill from here. The characters were uniformly superb while their interactions were priceless. It was also great seeing all of the different storylines and tones used here, and all characters got their moment to shine.

SpongeBob SquarePants Season 1 Review

Best Moment – Again, a lot to choose from here, but I personally want to go with the episode Rock Bottom, in particular that hilarious evasive bus moment. That was brutal, but funny. The entire episode remains SpongeBob’s most purely imaginative and atmospheric hour.
