Ranking Ice Age Films

Blue Sky Studios’ Ice Age franchise gets a lot of hate nowadays, but it is a series that at least started off good and it had two enjoyable movies in its roster. But unfortunately, the rest were all unnecessary, overly silly cartoon missteps that were bound to appeal to kids only. Without further ado, let’s rank this prehistoric franchise in what should be a rather obvious choice of placements.

5. Collision Course

The fifth (and maybe even final movie) of this franchise is by far the worst one as they reached the bottom of the barrel here. Not only are the characters horribly used and most are so incredibly annoying, but the asteroid storyline itself is horrendous and so absurd that it cannot appeal to any adult human in existence. The only good thing here is Scrat as he is per usual hilarious, but other than that, it’s a giant waste of time.

4. Continental Drift

Everything that I have said for the above flick applies here as well, though this one is a bit better as it is less silly in its overall plot. However, the family drama of Manny’s is introduced here and it was a very boring affair. And the less said about the over-the-top creature that is Granny, the better. This one is so chaotic with so many new characters that they all crumbled into a despairing nothingness with Scrat once again shining the most.

3. The Meltdown

This one is much better than the two films above because, though disparate, all of its subplots are at least serviceable as is this whole flick. Everything here is passable, from the characters to the plot to the humor. But the movie could have been so much better had they not separated the main team. That was a very foolish choice that really backfired as it made the film seem like a disconnected series of shorts instead of a feature movie.

2. Dawn of the Dinosaurs

Clearly the finest Ice Age sequel gets the deserved second spot on this list. Yes, Dawn of the Dinosaurs has a horrible, incredibly annoying Buck who gets introduced here for the first time, but at least others are fine with Sid being particularly memorable this time around. The dinosaurs are well utilized and the movie is immensely adventurous, being the most enjoyable film in the franchise in that regard. It truly is a surprisingly solid sequel.

1. Ice Age

The definitive number one place goes to the original movie that started it all. While it was obviously a big rip-off of Pixar’s ‘Monsters, Inc.’ in its baby storyline, nobody could deny the sweetness of that endearing plot with many scenes being quite cute. This is the only movie in the franchise that even has any sort of true storyline and that is to be respected. Also, the characterization was surely the greatest here with Sid, Manny and Diego being such an awesome trio. Unfortunately, we never got to see them all together like this, but at least here their dynamics were great.
