Ranking Disenchantment Seasons

Matt Groening’s Disenchantment is a fantasy comedy animated show that ran for five seasons on Netflix. Throughout its run, it struggled to find its right tone and style at first, but it gradually became better and better until it ended with a bang. This is my personal ranking of all five seasons of this very entertaining series.

5. Season 1

The first season of Disenchantment is the worst one as the show would only get better with each passing season. As is often the case with most comedies, this one also lacked humor at first as it struggled to find its footing and proper tone. The world building, storytelling and atmosphere were all terrific, however, and some episodes were excellent.

Disenchantment Season 1 Review

Best Moment – The final two episodes take the cake as the best of the bunch. This is where a lot of chaos erupted and stakes were significantly raised all of a sudden. The highlight came when Queen Dagmar revealed herself as the show’s main villain. That twist was unexpected and utterly delightful.

4. Season 2

The second season continued the trend of the series’ failure to decide whether it wants to be a comedy or a drama. It is better than the last season as this is where the show became darker, richer in scope and more ambitious, but this is still far from the best seasons as it’s too flawed and uneven tonally speaking.

Disenchantment Season 2 Review

Best MomentStairway to Hell sees Bean and Lucy go to hell to bring back Elfo from the dead, and this was by far the best, most creative and most entertaining episode of the entire season. The Elfo-Bean troubled relationship is the heart of this episode and the entire season. The moment when they first entered hell was the most adventurous in this batch of episodes.

3. Season 3

The third season of Disenchantment continued to feel messy and not as funny as it clearly wants to be. The tone was still all over the place here. But the world building was once again impressive and this season saw the most sprawling arcs in the show yet, so this is why it got the third placement on this list.

Disenchantment Season 3 Review

Best Moment – The third season culminated with Bean Falls Down where Bean became the queen only for a little while. That ending was another memorable cliffhanger for the show that really knew how to end every season with a bang. It’s a shame that the rest of the episodes here were not as epic as that superb finale.

2. Season 4

The fourth season is where Disenchantment finally found its footing.  The pacing was still all over the place, but the mythology had become quite intricate by this point and the character development was superb. But above all else this is where the show finally became more comedic with many hilarious moments throughout its run.

Disenchantment Season 4 Review

Best Moment – A lot happened during the finale of this season once again. Bean ended up facing the evil version of herself while Queen Dagmar grew in power. The final moment where she faced the camera while laughing at the audience was by far the most iconic one in this particular season.

1. Season 5

The fifth and final season of Disenchantment ended the show on such a great note. The characterization, scope and storytelling were all outstanding while the humor was consistently stellar with many very memorable and funny moments throughout. This is where the series reached its peak, so it was such a shame that it had to end just when it became great.

Disenchantment Season 5 Review

Best Moment – When it comes to the comedy, Elfo got so many moments to shine here. The funniest scenes were also those featuring a perv character called Weirdo. On the more dramatic end of the spectrum, the final confrontation between Bean and Dagmar was incredible with so much magic included that it was an absolute blast to watch.
