Pappy’s Poppy Review

Pappy’s Poppy Review

Pappy’s Poppy is a 1955 animated short film from the Merry Melodies series. It is a weaker short.

Butch the bulldog has a puppy. The little one is so nasty with his teeth that he constantly harasses the poor Sylvester. Whenever he tries to get rid of him, there comes Butch to beat him up. This short is one of those animal cartoons that are all about one gag repeated throughout to middling results. The movie is seriously lacking in energy and originality in gags, but at least the ending is very funny with the stork being chased providing a great closing moment.

The highway sequence is clearly the best realized of the bunch. It’s longer, well imagined and it worked in both of its scenarios with amusingly different outcomes. The animation is also solid. Butch is memorable here and so is Sylvester in his very tortured role, but again the short needed a better plot and more inspired humor.

Pappy’s Poppy is inferior in its gags and lesser energy, but some scenes are great and Sylvester is particularly memorable here.

My Rating – 3.6
